72 = 1972 Z= 20 gauge 0K G820= Zero Kilograms, 820 Grams. It's the weight of the barrel before it's mated to the extension.

You're welcome. Those charts are for serial numbers without a letter prefix. Also, if you're looking at Browning's website, they're only for the 12 gauge. The 20 was introduced in 1958 and always had both a letter model code and a date code (which could be digits or letters).

Hi all, I have a 12 gauge auto-5 which I'm having trouble finding the manufacture date of. The serial is 65XXX (symbols beneath are a UK magazine restriction proof mark), which would suggest it is a 1924 model. However, it has speed load and the cross bolt safety which I believe wasn't introduced until later on? Am I misreading the number? Here's also a picture of the barrel proof marks for good measure...

I believe it's a 1965 model. Mine starts with 60XXX and I was told it's a 1960, and the R* marking on the barrel suggests 1951-65, but I can't identify the mark above it. I'd be interested to know how your gun performs with the magazine crimp. My crimp seems to bind the friction rings and it struggles sometimes with 28gram shells. Seems fine with 32grams but I don't have anywhere to shoot them

Opossum, 1965 makes sense, I've been looking at 1924 models and they are nothing like mine The mark above looks like a lowercase 'h', which puts the barrel at 1929 proof. It does look pretty old, as a lot of the bluing has begun to turn brown . It also has a serial number, with a funny symbol above: As to the crimp, I don't think it makes a difference to mine as the friction ring doesn't move far down enough the magazine tube. It is a 2 3/4" chamber though, so the crimp might not be as far up as on a 3" model. 28g shells work fine with mine, I have the friction rings set to "heavy loads" and a bit of oil along the mag tube and it cycles no problem.

You have a 16 gauge "American Browning" made by Remington during WWII.

Okay Guys I've looked and looked this morning on line for a date look up sheet, Browning's website isn't working for me.
I received my Great Grandfathers, Police issued, Browning 20 gauge. as he is long gone and my grandfathers memory to poor to give me solid answers, I am looking for any info i can on this piece.
From what i can tell it is in fact a A5. The Barrel marks are as follows
Serial Number is C72xx
Browning Arms Company St. Louis Mo ** Special Steel - 20 Gauge - Shells 2 3/4"
Left just before the receiver, 3 leaf clover stamp or a "club" and an oval with the letters BP inside them.
Right just before the receiver a Heart with the letters LK stamped just after the heart.
With the barrel removed and what i would call the underside of the barrel a Diamond with the letters DZ.
Other marks i have found a "w" stamped on the trigger gaurd.
Browning Trade Mark on the receiver. Yes there is a knob on the pistol portion of the stock. And a Browning butt plate.
Help a guy out!

You're in luck, RemDog, as your Browning was made by......Remington!
You've got an "American Browning" made during WWII. FN didn't make the Auto-5 in 20 gauge until 1958.

Anyway to find out exactly what year? Or anything else about it?
What's with all the "playing card suits" stamped around the barrel.

I think that's Remington stuff, they stamped guns that were returned for repair. But I don't know the details. Maybe over at Remington Lovers? And I believe your gun was made between 1940 and 1946.
