I am looking for a replacement barrel for my 1977 Wingmaster. It is a 3" Magnum barrel. I do not know what the original length was, but I would like that same original length or longer for Skeet.

The gun was used for a year or 2 up to 1981, It went into a closet and was neglected. 3 years ago I had someone look at it to get it into working condition. The original barrel was pitted very badly inside and the person cleaning it up for me was not a gunsmith. for a time the shotgun has been a home defender style gun with the barrel length reduced to make it so. I want to start skeet shooting and shooting small game.

Now there are Express models, youth models in the 870 20 gauge family. I am finding out these newer versions use barrels that do not fit my older wingmaster?

I need to find a barrel that is for a wingmaster only? What length will get me to original and are there longer barrels available? To who should I turn besides ebay?

Dad.

If you have the old full frame 20 gauge, it will be a hunt to find barrels that fit, and they won't be cheap. Typical 26" barrels were choked IC or Mod, and 28" barrels were choked Mod or Full. This was before choke tubes. I would start by using Google. 870 full frame 20 gauge barrels for sale. Mark

Here is a quote from a Shotgunworld thread from 2003.

"We don't need your serial No., the X is enough to tell us it is one of the earlier ones made on a 12 g sized receiver. Your gun does fall into that catagory.

In Remington 20G 870's, it goes like this

X = full sized frame, 2 3/4 chamber

N = full sized frame, 3" chamber

K = small frame, 2 3/4" chamber

U = small frame, 3" chamber

Since yours is a full size frame 20g, getting a spare barrel may be a challenge since they have not been made for quite a while now.

My memorry has "slipped" but I think the 20g full size frames were discontinued before Remchokes came out and the barrels made for the "N" and "U" receivers will not fit them.

From the Remington Help Center;

Which barrels are interchangeable on the Models 870, 1100, and 11-87?

Answer

Model 870--All standard 2 3/4" and 3" barrels are interchangeable within gauge, with the exception of 20 gauge guns built prior to 1977. These guns can be distinguished by the serial number. The suffix on these 20 gauges will be either "X" or "N". If your serial number ends in either "X" or "N" please refer to our Obsolete Parts Dealers for extra barrels.

Looks like Remington no longer stocks barrels for the 20G full sized frame guns."

Gentlemen thank you. I have the N suffix Wingmaster, so I know now what I have and where I stand with regard to replacement parts. It is a good gun that I plan to keep and take much better care of.

Corson's barrels and Barrel Exchange both have some 870 Standard weight barrels shown. Not cheap but they aren't likely to get cheaper as time passes.

I bought one recently from Barrel Exchange the 28 " Full with a vent rib. I am going to get re-aclimated with the gun for a bit and then see if I want or really need to go another direction with it.

Thank you everyone for the advise and the offers. It was most helpful.

And as a PS Barrel Exchange were 1st rate. Friendly, helpful and they beat their shipping arrival date by a day. Great folks.
