Last year, the National Shooting Sports Foundation estimated firearms sales at 13.1 million, down 6.1 percent from 14 million in 2017 and down 16.5 percent from record sales of 15.7 million in 2016. As mentioned, Remington and AcuSport each filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last year.
“At the peaks in 2013 and 2016, we reached 13 million to 14 million domestic builds and 5 million to 7 million imports of guns, which now are probably down 30 percent to 40 percent, fluctuating,” Rafn said.
But the phenomenon isn’t limited to firearms manufacturers and distributors. Another issue is the rash of retailers that either stopped selling guns or altered their sales policies in the past year or so.
The highest-profile example, of course, is Dick’s Sporting Goods, which announced last year it would stop selling assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines following the tragedy in Parkland, FL.
The company also stopped selling guns to anyone younger than 21. And Dick’s CEO Ed Stack even penned an op-ed in the Washington Post that stated, in part, “It is clear we have a problem with the gun laws in this country. They are not squarely focused on keeping all of us safe—especially our children.”
Other retail (and retail-driven) announcements last year targeting gun sales include:
Specialty outdoor retailers REI and Canada’s MEC (Mountain Equipment Co-op) suspended orders from Vista Outdoor due to the company’s manufacture of semi-automatic rifles. Vista Outdoor’s brands in the outdoor and cycling space include Bell, Blackburn, Bushnell, CamelBak, Camp Chef, Giro, and Jimmy Styks. In response, Vista Outdoor announced plans to sell the company’s firearms brands. “The bottom line is this, the company grew too fast and beyond its core,” CEO Christopher Metz said in May 2018. The company still hasn’t landed a buyer. Walmart also said the company would no longer sell guns or ammunition to anyone under 21 years of age. The discount giant also said the company would no longer sell items resembling assault-style rifles, including toys and air guns. Kroger, the nation’s largest grocery chain, said the company will stop selling guns and ammunition to customers who are younger than 21 years old. Kroger sells guns at 43 of its 133 Fred Meyer locations in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington.

During the eight (8) years of Obama/Biden FBI background checks averaged ~17 million per year. So far under Trumps administration, they have averaged ~27 million per year. That is a ~63% increase in background checks run by the FBI. As a NCIS is required to make the retail purchase of a firearm, I would suggest that gun sales have been on the rise and not in a slump.

Or not? After the Cerberus saga, the ownership purgatory that`s followed, and now the pandemic shutdown ( which I`m sure Remington could ill afford ), I find a part of me surprised that there`s a Remington left operational at all. Lord knows the company, and the people who work for it, could stand some stability. To say that Remington is overdue for something good to happen to it is a gross understatement IMHO. Could be. Therefore the " Perhaps ". Or not?

Of course you're completely wrong. NICS numbers don't equal sales. The NSSF has their adjusted NICS numbers that better tell the tale. The adjusted NICS data were derived by subtracting out NICS purpose code permit checks and permit rechecks used by states for CCW permit application checks as well as checks on active CCW permit databases. NSSF started subtracting permit rechecks in February 2016. One year ago, firearm sales sucked. The May 2020 NSSF-adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figure of 1,595,790 is an increase of 75.2 percent compared to the May 2019 NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 910,910.

Of course, you're equally wrong as in using your information, all numbers would be adjusted (YOY) and equate out to increased sales since the current POTUS took office.

Trump slump? Stop with your logic and facts! It doesn't fit the narrative. All is well! Nothing to see here! Move along!

"Then, Remington faced a double strike of financial problems. Firearm sales slumped in the wake President Donald Trump’s election, and ongoing litigation that appellate courts were allowed to continue despite The Protection of Lawful Commerce of Arms Act of 2005, which was designed to shield gunmakers from such suits. “True,” the courts said, “Remington couldn’t be sued for manufacturing the rifle, but they could be sued for marketing it under state law.” Hence, litigation costs persisted, and Remington’s sales dropped by 27.5 percent in the months after Trump took office. ----
"The firearms and ammunition markets have been enjoying a revival since the COVID-19 outbreak shut down America in March 2019, but the increase in business wasn’t enough to keep Remington afloat. On June 26, 2020, news was released that Remington planned to file for bankruptcy again. This news wasn’t a shock to insiders of the firearm industry."(Guns & Ammo.)
That Remington might go through a restructuring is certainly a good possibility. However, WSJ called it imminent in June and within days . . . and they clearly were off the mark on that, as it hasn't happened yet. They need better anonymous, unconfirmed sources.
