I was talking to a guy at the gun club today who mentioned he has an old barrel for an 870. It is a full choke plain bead barrel that was pretty standard on the 870 back in the day. The odd thing is the top of the barrel has serrations cut into it for the length of the barrel.

I've never heard of or seen anything like it before and am wondering if anybody has any info on it. My 870 (mfg in 1951) has a plain modified barrel but no serrations. Was this a factory offering or is this a "custom" barrel?

Standard factory on certain models. They called it a "matted top surface".

I had one of those on an 870 mfg in 1954. Mine was the deluxe model so it had checkered wood and and a beaver tail forend too. I researched it a little and from what I recall, they only offered that barrel type for the first five years. It was kind of a neat feature and I imagine it was to knock down glare. Not sure why they stopped making them but perhaps the vent rib was becoming popular so if you wanted reduced glare, you would choose that option so the plain barrels became just that, plain.

John

Edit - I just noticed you have one made in 1951 so this barrel would be period correct for your gun assuming what I heard was true.

Matted barrels were still cataloged in 1960.
