I’m looking for a model 11. How hard is it to find a special? I’m wanting one with all the extra engraving more than standard. Was thinking of 20 or 12.

I'd take a 20ga Sportsman, myself.

A Model 11 or Sportsman in B "Special" Grade must be extremely scarce as I've seldom seen one. One in 20-gauge even more so. Throw in one with the 1930 to 36 three-bird roll stamping, only found on The Sportsman, the Model 11 didn't get the roll-stamping until 1937 and the pickings get really slim.

That first linked Model 11 B is marked on the barrel The Remington Arms Union Metallic Cartridge Company, Inc. which would put it in the 1916 to 20 time frame, but the way that receiver is marked it is from well into the Remington Arms Co., Inc. time frame. So, I think the only thing B "Special" Grade about that gun is the barrel. The only thing B about that 20-gauge in the second listing is the selling company's name. The third listing for the 16-gauge Sportsman doesn't show a close enough picture of the left side of the receiver to be sure but normally the B "Special" Grade had a slight stock cheek back of the receiver and a bigger checkering pattern on the grip. With the barrel date code of KTT (K = May, TT = 1948) close to the very end of production.

A real The Sportsman B "Special" Grade --

By serial number this receiver was put in work during June 1935, though the date code on the barrel shows it made six years earlier. Sales weren't fast during The Great Depression.

Redlazer in today's market whatever the market will bare!

Good luck in your quest, you will have better odds finding an A grade or a Skeet Grade with the 3 birds so don't pass one up if you like it!

Good luck, Will
