What spare parts, springs, etc. do you keep in your range bag if you are competing with a 391? My son is using my back up gun (really now his primary gun) for SCTP and some NSCA competitions. I want to make sure he has what he needs to avoid an issue in competition.

Suggestions?

Another 391 for backup.

Yep typically won't be enough time to swap out parts

The coil springs tend to weaken over time. Means you should see it coming, swap before a shoot.

Had a OEM interrupted flange piston leg go on both a 12 and 20. Abruptly. Got the solid flange Angleport in both now. More of a PM upgrade suggestion than a "quick fix at shoot" thing.

Had a bolt break on my main 12, but not something I'd purchase in advance. Close to $400, IIRC.
Think I was well over 80k at the time.

You might purchase a complete trigger group, tho. Can be changed during a shoot quickly. Had a hammer strut (one side) break giving occasional FTFires. A hammer spring can weaken just enough to raise it's ugly head during a shoot. Both issues cropped up during practice, tho.

The best option is a backup gun. But, to answer your question, the following parts can be replaced with ease in under five minutes:

- gas piston
- bolt handle
- full trigger group + extra retaining pin
- full bolt assembly

You can obviously replace parts on either of the last two, but as others have pointed out you usually don't have the time to do so during a shoot. He should also have the following in his range bag:

- can of Breakfree CLP
- small punch for removing trigger pin
- extra choke tube wrench
- 4-00 steel wool for cleaning off piston shaft
- multitool

You can get a hell of a lot done with those five items.
