I recently acquired a Breda 12 Ga autoloader. As far as the chart listed on this page says it was Mfg in 1957. There is a 5 digit number stamped on the top of the barrel near the receiver. My question is, could this be the serial #? I also received the original Mfg document which has 2 different 5 digit #'s One starts with N B.V. #####, and the other is at the bottom of the paper and is N#####. I removed the forearm and there are a bunch of numbers and symbols stamped on the underside. those numbers match the other ones that are on the original document. I've never owned a breda, I know they're hand made so is it safe to assume this is a good shotgun? Any help would be appreciated

No they were not hand made. It is a version of the JMB Auto-Five. Here is a laudatory look at them: https://gundigest.com/more/classic-guns ... da-shotgun .

OK maybe they're not hand made, but are you able to answer the question regarding the serial number?

Serial numbers were not required until 1968.

Wasn't that just a US requirement?

In Canada, this was debated as late as 2012. https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/new-lo ... -1.1143146

I have no idea what the timeline was for all countries: it was the UN protocol that changed (or attempted to change) things internationally: https://www.unodc.org/documents/firearm ... _Ebook.pdf .
