I have a Beretta AL390, 20 gauge wood stock with very nice wood. My question is, it has an "NRA" grip cap on it. Does anyone know if this was a special run? It is Gold colored, about the size of a quarter, and looks factory installed. I bought it from a gentleman on another site who never shot it, but have lost his info, so can't ask him. Anyone know? Thanks in advance.

Beretta has done several runs of their 300 series (303,390,391) for special groups...some examples of these were DU, NWTF, and the NRA.
If you could post some photos, it would help to determine if you have one of the NRA guns.

Yes, that gun was a prize at a fundraising dinner or some similar thing. Looks to have nice upgraded wood. Excellent guns and scarce in 20 gauge. Does the receiver have any special engraving or inlays?

That's very nice and tasteful. Some of the "dinner guns" have additional gaudy engraving and writing that many people consider a degradation as compared to a standard factory gun. I have a 20 gauge 303, the model just before the 390 and love it. Enjoy yours!

Thanks again Claysmoke. I have a 12 Ga Gold Mallard also and it doesn't have the NRA emblem, so I figured it must have been some kind of an NRA special. It does have some pretty fancy wood, and I do remember the gentleman I bought it from, saying they made a lot more 12 gauge than 20.

Yes the medallions could be changed to reflect whomever was commissioning the gun. Normally they were just the Beretta logo. Years ago I bought a 12 gauge 303 that had killer wood and a Ducks Unlimited medallion. I removed it and inserted an Italian 2 lire coin. It fit nearly perfectly. This picture is before I centered it, and then filled in the recess with clear epoxy.

I like the italian coin in a Beretta shotgun. Touch of class.

Could be a standard gold mallard with a nra stock bought from coles Gunsmithing. Most NRA dinner guns had some sort of NRA markings on the received.

Non OEM stock from some source. Looks great just as is. For my tastes anyways, better than with overdone additional logos on the receiver. I may well own another Betetta autoloader someday. I've had two previously. I like the idea of personalizing the grip cap. I'll probably do that on my next repeater, and try to think up something meaningful. Brittany head or pointing silhouette; Sid Bell style grouse or woodcock maybe; American flag? Super nice gun. I'd be proud to own it. Enjoy!

I like the coin! I never quite understood how a Ducks Unlimited version made it any more valuable. I see shotguns for sale all the time advertised at twice the price because that were DU. Other than nice wood I don't see the excitement for it. What am I missing?

Mystery solved. I found the gentleman who I bought this from on the Smith&Wesson Forum finally. We have been in contact, and he said he bought a 12 and 20 gold mallard at the same time, and the 20 came from the factory with the NRA emblem on it. His thought was that Beretta makes up X number of stocks for NRA guns, and use the unused leftover stocks for regular factory shotguns. Sounds logical to me. In any case, it's a very nice shotgun, and I'm very happy with it. Thanks to all who responded.
