Wanted to get some insight on this. I have Walt’s book and realize that for the 16 gauge, the standard pre war barrel lengths were 26, 28, and 30 inches.

That said, has anyone seen or heard of a factory 24 inch bbl on a pre- war 16 gauge?

Reason for asking is that I am going to take a look at one and the owner believes it is un modified. I have seen a couple pics and it does have a bead that looks correct but the owner cannot measure the choke. When I see it I will measure the choke and that should tell the tale, I hope. Just wondering if anyone has ever seen a 24 inch barrel on one I am very cautious that it has been cut.

If it matters, it looks to be a late pre-war made in 43.

Thanks,

BB

The muzzle support for the rib is longer than all the other supports. If the muzzle support for this gun is the same size as all the others it has probably been trimmed. As I recall, the supports have a 2 inch spacing.

Thanks for the reply, and apologies if I was unclear or misleading.

The gun in question is a standard grade with a plain barrel, no rib.

My mistake. I had a skeet grade in my head. Perhaps I need to learn how to read.
I wish you a happy holiday season.

Walt,

No worries and apologies for my delay. I very much appreciate your taking the time to respond and was hoping to get your opinion on this. In your educated opinion and/or experience, would you think a factory 24 inch barrel might be possible?

I haven’t yet gotten to see this specimen and hope to In next few days, but appreciate your insight.

Happy holidays

Bob

Everything Ithaca is possible. I and a buddy ordered a 16 ga. Classic with 24 skeet choke barrels. Buddy sold but I still have mine. So someone, maybe like me, wanted a shorter barrel. My reason for wanting a 24 inch barrel is, when adding the length of the receiver, the gun is about the same overall length as the NIDs I enjoy shooting. Good luck!
Best, Walt

It could have been special order, checking early Gun Digest's show
that the shortest barrel is 26 inches.
Your caliper and the choke markings at the breach end by the serial number will
tell the whole story.
