I have a chance to pick up a Ithaca Nitro Special 12GA, looks to be a nice old gun, 80% of blueing, dull wood but no dent's, scratches or cracks, bores are nice but some pitting in chambers. I ask because I've never owned an American double, always shot Model 37's, Model 51's and 870's. Is it worth rolling the dice?

For $200 you can't really go wrong. Those doubles were built like tanks. Very durable. If it were at a show it may have $350-375 on it.

What Matt said plus check the wrist for cracks . That's the weak spot on doubles in general .

Careful!! One gets into those 12-gauges cheap. Then you want the others and those 20-gauges and .410-bores are a lot more dear!!

That’s a good price. I paid about $300 for mine on gunbroker a few years ago. Nothing wrong with the Nitro Special from a utilitarian standpoint.
