When did Ithaca use the "Proof Tested" barrel mark that has the word "Proof" in a semi-circle above the word "Tested? TIA

I am pretty sure the books have this info. Sorry, mine are not in front of me. I will see if I can find it.

Thank you, IthacaMatt.

I know Ithaca used the semi-circle "Proof Tested" mark after WWII up until the early 1960s. The question I have is whether that mark was also used prior to WWII. It does not appear on the WWII Military contract guns although I have seen it on one but suspect it may have been a replacement barrel.

I have 4 1937 guns and two 1938 guns. They do not have the proof stamp. Sn 20846 from 1940 also does not have the stamp. The oldest gun that I have that does have the stamp is a 20 gauge that I believe is possibly a "lunch box special" and is serial number 69338. Depending on who's serial number list you refer to the gun either should not exist or is dated to 1946. The next oldest in my inventory is from 1949 and does have the proof.

I have guns in the same range as Cutcher. My 1938 12 gauge S and 1941 16 gauge standard grade do not have the proof tested markings. My next newest guns are a 1947 12 gauge T and a 1948 16 gauge T and both have the proof tested mark. I don't have anything in between those years.

Statement: on the gun with the suspected replacement barrel, the serial number on the frame should have been different from the serial number on the barrel.

Thank you for your responses. So it seems it is likely a post War mark. I've never seen it on any of the WWII Military contract gun that I believe were original. The one Military gun that had the semi circle Proof Tested mark on the barrel looked like it had the original barrel serial number crossed out and a new one matching the receiver marked on it.

Did Ithaca date their barrels? If so, where is the date located?

Other than the serial number I am not aware of any dating of the barrel.

The serial number of early Model 37's will be stamped on the barrel and on the face of the receiver. The serial number index is here: https://diamondgunsmithing.com/VSN.html
