Does anyone know how is the “plug” on the wooden butt plate is removed so the stock can be removed?

My understanding is you have to use a wood screw. Screw it in until it bites and then use the screw to pull it out. I've got an English stock in 12 but I have never taken it down so I do not have personal experience it the procedure.

There is a small hole in the plug. Open it up so a 1/4-20 tap can be used.
Using a piece of 1/4-20 thread rod and a large socket the plug can be pulled out.
make sure the socket is padded and pull slowly the plug will come out.
A rubber hammer will drive the plug back into place

Screw something in the hole and pull it out! Easy as that.
