Hello All -

First post here. Great site with a wealth of information. I purchased a Model 37 today and noticed the serial number is 778xxx-2 but its marked upside down on the barrel near the receiver. Can anyone tell me the year this shotgun was made and why the serial number would be marked on the barrel near the receiver upside down? The markings on the other side of the barrel have the typical Ithaca Gun Company markings. I tried to do some searches but didn't find much. Appreciate any information you can provide.

Thanks,
Ron

Looks like ‘61. The barrels and receivers were stamped with the same number. You’ll find the receiver stamped at the front end next to the barrel. The -2 is the choke & yours is modified.

The serial number is nowhere to be found on the receiver.

Looking at the end of the receiver, where the barrel and mag tube go in, is where you’ll see the number. Not on the side of the action. It’s the opposite side of where the actuating rod is. If not, the number has been ground off. If that’s the case, you own an illegal firearm. No joke.

Maybe I’m not explaining the location very well. It’s literally right next to the barrel.

Okay yes the serial number is where you explained it to be. I was looking all over for it on the side of the receiver. Thank You! Now for the upside down serial number on the barrel.....is that common?

Not sure about that. Might just be a matter of perspective.
