The pics tell the story. Should I assume the "2" designates Mod? This shotgun didn't strike me as one leaving factory w/two barrels (no checkering, clunky buttstock).

The serial number should have a -suffix. That will be the choke designation

That 2 tells me it’s modified, based on what other Ithaca guns use for choke ID.

Is the serial number on the right rear side of the receiver? 1963 was the year that the factory transitioned to interchangeable Roto Forged barrels and moved the serial number from the barrel and right front face of the receiver to the right rear side of the receiver. The choke ID was changed from a number on the right side of the chamber to letters on the left side. Perhaps your gun is an early transition model with the serial number moved but the choke ID number not yet moved. Just guessing.

Yes.

In the Ithaca world,

1=I.Cyl
2=Mod
4=Full

Every one of my guns that have both designations (numeric/alphabetic) follow this pattern.

Placement could be an oops. No need to scrap a barrel that is correctly marked, just not in the standard place.

jpg,
That’s a great pic. You’re not helping me with my impatience for the pheasant season!

I am curious, why did they skip 3?

Interesting and thank you for the answer. I have never heard of a IM being factory issued but that definitely makes sense.
