when was this style buttplate adopted ? ie: what year

I poked around a bit in the safe and this is what I can tell you. My iron framed 66 has that but plate but as we know there are no s/n lists on them so that is of little help. Most of my 37's have recoil pads but some do not. I have a '65 model with the old style butt plate. I have a '74 model with the plate you are showing. So somewhere in that 9 year window.

There is a 1967 M&P / trench gun on Gunbroker. That is why I am asking out of curiosity. The gun looks like it might have been faked up a little bit.

I do not like the USMC stamp, does not look correct to me. As far as the but plate I would call it plausible.

The serial nbr is 33x less than the 1967 one that is here in Ohio. So it is a correct gun, and is right close to that block of guns that were sold to the civilian market. HOWEVER, as you say, the USMC looks like it was added (which diminishes the value). Take a real good look at the screws in that buttplate. They have been turned. You can see where someone dinked them just a little with an ill fitting screw driver. Having been turned and actually clocked together makes me think that something was done with the buttplate. It does look like it had police dept markings on it.

The number on the left side of the bayonet lug does not match the SN of the receiver - should it ?

IIRC, That is the General Rec. butt plate and appears shortly after they took over I Ithaca Gun circa 1967/68. The USMC looks hooky to me.

The number, 111888388, on the bayonet lug is a drawing number for the Vietnam era Winchester M1200.

I agree, the USMC stamp looks funny. Not sure. These guns are all over the place as far as stamps, markings, etc. You have to be real careful if you are trying to buy a real one. A lot of fakes out there. Hard to say unless rock solid provenance can be provided.
