I’m thinking about maybe doing some Cowboy action shooting and am interested in getting a 1897 Winchester or clone.

There are a bunch of these that appear to be original Winchesters on GB for around $500, some even less.

As I’ve only dealt with modern shotguns; I don’t know anything about these. Does that price sound about right? (Yeah, I see some that go into the thousands, but I’m just looking at shooters, not collectables) And if so why would someone pay more for a clone when they can get an original Winchester?

Opinions on good clones if I need to go that route?

Just looking for some opinions. I’ll go to match and check it out, but they don’t have them very often around here and I figured this would be the place to get shotgun info.

Unmolested original 97s are getting scarce and that's where the high dollars go. A clapped out, cut down '97 is worth less than $500, but in this market, that may be what they are going for. Originals are getting quite old and I'm not sure that barrel wall thickness on a cut down '97 will support tapping for screw in chokes. Doesn't really matter for CAS, but that also explains some of the cost differential.

The only clone that I am aware of were those made by Norinco. I won't buy and don't want any firearm made in China, so cant tell you much except that they needed work to be suitable for CAS and you would be challenged getting spare parts.

I would suggest looking at the following website and discussing with them. They specialize in the Model 1897. Good luck!
