bushmaster, is that a Sako Finnwolf? I don't know them well but have always liked them. If so, what caliber?

I really like the Model 27 with 5" barrel (I think it is anyway). I have one like that too.

I'm thinking the rifle is a Winchester 88. Never owned one and I've sure been wrong before, once.

Regards,
Dave

That is a pre-64 Winchester M88 with the wide checkering pattern. Fine rifle (deer hunt with a 1963 version in .308 WIN) myself.

1955 Winchester 88 in 308 and a 1955 pre-27
This Winchester thing might turn into a problem

Your 88 looks to be in very good condition. Nice looking grain in the wood too. I'll bet it shoots like hellfire. 308 is a beast.

Your M-88 is an very desireable early one with a nice piece of wood--the later ones were good guns but not made like the early ones--keep that one and cherish it--they are inherently accurate and the .308 cartridge is one of the greatest of all time--extremely versatile! If you don't handload for it, you might consider starting--its a gun that responds well to thoughtful handloads.
My own 88 had a four-power Lyman scope and weaver rings, and would make some unbelievably tight groups from a shooting bench.
Wonderful gun.
Excellent handgun too, by the way!

Is that revolver a mod. 28 Highway Patrolmen? Definitely an N frame, looks like a .357 magnum, 6 inch? I have one of those.

He says its a pre-27, which makes it a pre 28 as well, no Hwy Patrolman. But a sweetheart that looks like new--should be salted away for permanent!

I understand what you're saying. I always thought of myself as more of a remington guy (870; 700bdl). Then came a M12 from 1928 .... Then two model 70's ... One a pre-war & the other from the mid 70's .... Then a model 94 .... Where will it end? After a model 88? Doubt it. After another model 70? Who knows. All I know is this is fun.

Very nice. That 88 is really, really nice. I have a '65 with a Weaver on it, and it is a sweet shooter, but not nearly as purty as your pre-64. But it was my dad's hunting rifle so of course it is priceless...

Also like that Smith. Two classics you have there, for sure.

Enjoy.

I am a Winchester guy, but a 1955 pre 27 is much more a keeper than the 88. How long is that barrel?

My first real rifle was a model 88 in .308 with basket weave checkering. I sure wish I still had it.

Was expecting to take a hiatus from posting for a while.

However, I took my new-to-me 1955 Winchester 88 in .308 to the range for the first time tonight. I was only wearing a shirt and there is no recoil pad, only a hard plastic butt plate. Gun was loud and unpleasant:( But still fun:)

Hope it will be more pleasant outdoors, with me wearing a coat and it wearing a kick-killer lace up butt pad.

Anyone else notice the kick from a .308 Model 88?

How does it fare with more padding?

Revolver is a 1955 Pre-27 .357 Magnum with a 5 inch barrel.
(None of my guns are too good to shoot)

I had a S&W M-27 with a 5 inch barrel. I wish I still had it.

Never really noticed the recoil from mine when hunting - nearly always have a jacket and heavy shirt or two on. Now from the bench on bags is an entirely different story...

Well you have to admit, how often do you see a picture of a whitetail taken in a cotton field? It's a first for me and it is a very nice picture.
