Beautiful photos. I've owned a couple of Model 50s that I parted with. Sill own a Model 59 that's in pristine condition. I'm conflicted on the 50. Great shooting gun, but in my opinion, they are difficult to work on. Stock doesn't come off easily. Stripping the receiver for a novice is a bit of a challenge. Otherwise they are wonderful guns. The Super X One is still my favorite Winchester semi auto.

I like shooting them. I don't need to remove stocks often. make good loaners at my range. shooters like their simple design and handling.

[quote="casonet"] Great shooting gun, but in my opinion, they are difficult to work on. Stock doesn't come off easily. Stripping the receiver for a novice is a bit of a challenge.[quote] The Model 50 is a piece of cake to work on. . Easy to remove the stock, receiver comes apart and goes back together with very little effort. . The very important tool is the one to remove the stock. Once you have this the rest is straight forward. . I'm posting a picture, I have on photobucket, so look closely above my M50 you'll see a 1/2" drive Snap-On ratchet and above it is a brass tool I made from a municipal water meter tail piece. . It's the threaded nipple, on the property side of the meter, that you attach your waterline to your house. . About 20 minutes in a vise with a good file and there it is; a M50 stock removal tool. .

Question for you guys. I have a Model 59. I have never shot it because the fiber glass barrel is nearly 60 years old. How can I know if it’s safe to shoot. The gun is in like new condition.

look for fiber separation at the muzzle. if none, keep you loads under 1 1/8oz 1200fps. 1oz ideal. shoot away.

The gun is in like new condition. I believe the M59 barrel is stronger than what you'd first assume. . I too was barrel cautious with the M59 I picked up. . It's in very good condition aside from a small spot of bluing worn on the top of the receiver. The barrel is good at the muzzle, fixed mod. choke. I shot a box of trap target loads and found the gun a joy to shoot. . I remember reading somewhere the M59 barrel went through extensive strength testing and was considered as strong as the steel barrel. . Fast foward 60 years later, what Bobski suggests is good advice. Before I shot the M59; I pulled the trigger asy. for a good cleaning and lubrication as it was fair clean inside but dry.. . Installed a new recoil spring and set the timing. . The early reports on the M59 mentioned they were considered a tad butt heavy. I noticed with mine the butt stock has a second large hole drilled that reduces the rear weight. The gun seems to balance nice, comes up real quick and right on target. my 59 is special. I bought it from a Winchester employee involved in its creation. it has aaa select (field wood) and a factory fitted Winchester ventilated pad. (correct circa pad for the year the gun was made.) it has all 3 win chokes to it. looks brand new. I wont shoot it. its too nice.

I've got some questions regarding the bolt hold back function and also the function of the carrier lock on a model 50 I recently bought. I shot a couple of rounds of trap with this gun wo doing any R&R on it except for removing the trigger assy and cleaning things up a little. Didn't initially have any problems. The other day I had the carrier lock "jump" over the stop feature on the bolt when the bolt was locked back after a shot. Pressing the carrier lock "button" to close the bolt resulted in the gun being locked up. I see what the problem is, so just working on a solution. There's a little slop between the carrier lock and the lock screw, but it doesn't seem any different that that on one of my other 50's that I checked (after I made sure the lock screws were not loose). I'm thinking of replacing the lock screw (on all of my 50's) How hard is it to remove the lock screw and / or does anyone have tips to make it easier? Does it screw out far enough to get a hold of it by the threads?
I've got another question related to this. In playing around trying to figure this out, I've come to the conclusion that I don't see exactly how the carrier lock interacts w the bolt when the bolt is in the locked open position. The bolt does not release until the carrier lock "button" is pushed almost all the way in. I don't see where the carrier lock really makes contact with the bolt. I'm sure it's probably something obvious...but not to me at the moment.
Any info or feedback on any of this would be greatly appreciated.
Thx in advance .....RA

it interacts with the trigger group. i had the exact issue you have. i changed trigger groups and the issue went away. look at your trigger group when trying to nail it down and let us know what you find.
