I finally completed the assembly of my M12 Heavy Duck project (thanks to Scott Wright who got the trigger group "timed") - I loaded it with dummy rounds/snap caps and cycled the action. I noticed that in order to get the forend to slide back, I first had to give it a little bit of forward pressure, then it would slide back. Is this normal?

When using snap caps or dry firing the little forward pressure you refer to is necessary. It is just part of the design.
However, when firing live ammo, the recoil will take care of that and your gun will cycle just fine. You shouldn't even notice it.
Hope that helps, let us know how you like shooting it.
