I've been watching this for a few weeks. Possibly this one is late enough (ser. #1860009), to have been engraved in a manner such as a Y gun, which was the subject discussed recently on another thread by Ms. Muerrle.

https://www.gunbroker.com/item/779518533

["P.Muerrle"]This gun was one of the "last of the Model 12s" that went through the Custom Shop. There were no in house engravers at this time, late 80s, so all of the engraving was done in Italy but the pigeons were all done by me as an outside contract. Porting was not done at the factory.

To my untrained eye, the engraving pattern and style look somewhat similar on both guns; of course, one has gold inlays and the other doesn't.

Regardless of where it was done or by whom, IMHO, this gun is beautifully understated (no gold) and elegant. Great wood also.

Opinions anyone?

Boy, they did some job selecting the wood for that butt stock. Very nice.

First gun linked has Trap/Skeet checkering, not Pigeon Grade. Engraving isn't factory but it had me fooled also when this gun was first listed. Second gun, was a bidding war gun which money spent likely can't ever be recouped. I see about $1200 on first gun and $1500 on second gun only because it's got legit factory engraving and would make a great looking shooter.

So the gold inlay gun has factory engraving but the other doesn't? How can you tell?

Mike,

I originally thought the first gun you posted was factory engraved as well, I was schooled on why it isn't and then it was confirmed by our factory engraving expert, Ms. Muerrle. Second one was easier given the serial number range and style of engraving. I got that one correct right off the bat and it was confirmed by Ms. Muerrle, as you posted in your first post in this thread. IMHO most aftermarket engraving was done on pre 64 model 12s, not so much on post 64 guns, which is another factor to consider. I am told a Winchester engraving book is due to hit the streets sometime this summer or fall and alot of the engraving details will be outlined within it.
