On Monday, I bought a Model 12 16-gauge Super Field grade. The gun is in beautiful shape except for an aftermarket (could be a Pachmayr) recoil pad that is rock hard and cracked throughout. I know these guns came from the factory with a hard rubber buttplate, but, in addition to some recoil absorption, I really need the extra LoP to be gained from a pad.

What would be the period-correct Winchester pad for 1959 shotguns? Also, if possible, could you point me to a source for them?

Many thanks in advance.

Solid red rubber. Awhile back we had a discussion about them. Wraco pointed out subtle differences between an original and the CSMC, as follows:

"PAT. JUNE 6.1922" = original.

"PAT. JUNE 6, 1922" = repro.

He also mentioned the factory pads used a softer composite rubber. Agree with that assessment. The CSMCs seem lighter in tint, more pink, to my eye.

I don't know who might manufacture new pads with the correct original font.

Thanks, Sam; that's just what I was looking to find out. And I can certainly live with the Galazan version getting me close enough to original, even if the punctuation is off on it.

Rubbing with a bit of well used motor oil will age and color the repro quite nicely.
