I have a fondness for old Winchester shotguns. I am looking at purchasing an old Winchester Model 37 single shot 12 gauge break gun. It will cost less then last Fridays beer tab. The only problem is there is a small inward bulge in the barrel just after the chamber on the bottom created by somebody rewelding the tab on underneath.

I was thinking about just getting it a new barrel as one comes up. No hurry on my end. My question is whether I can use a 20 gauge barrel? I found one on Ebay. Will it work in the receiver and will the fore stock work?

I am sure the barrel regardless of caliber will need a little refitting at least to set the head spacing.

Thanks.

12 gauge and 20 gauge 37s are different frame sizes.

Is that "bulge" or dent repairable? Mike Orlen would be a good source to find out and it may be something that is repairable. Might be something that can be fixed without weakening of the barrel. Just something for your consideration.

I would not put much money into repairing a low value gun unless there is sentimental attachment

It is, it blends very nicely at the receiver.

I’ve got a pound of lead in the stock, balance isn’t great but it’s fun to shoot trap with.

After the old stain and finish came off the wood is pleasing to look at.
