I’m looking at a shotgun for my grandsons. Saw this 1200, could this be a factory polychoke installation ?

Don’t know much about polychokes. Looking for something I can refinish and cut down.

Thanks.

It's definitely a Poly Choke. I can't say where it was installed, but it's a vented Poly Choke for sure.

The barrel is marked IMP. CYL. so I wouldn't think it is factory but who knows.

Thanks for the replies.

Was the choke stamped on the barrel different if it was factory installed ?

I wouldn’t think very many 1200s would have been improved cylinder. Maybe there were.

Don't know about Winchester but Remington has no choke markings on there factory cutts barrels not sure about Poly Chokes but when I see a barrel that has a choke marking and it is not a fixed choke I assume it is not factory. There should be someone on here that knows more about the markings than I do.

The only way a factory would mark a barrel with a polychoke as imp/cyl would be by mistake. That sort of thing does happen, I once saw a Winchester M1400 barrel that was marked M1200 for example. Another time I saw a brand new Franchi out of the box O/U that was a 16 gauge and the barrel was marked 12 gauge. The new owner wanted a 16, but complained about it being marked wrong, and the Franchi rep exchanged the gun for one marked correctly. I think he made a mistake, by returning it unshot. If it were me I would have test fired and if it worked well, good regulation etc, I would have kept it, and not only had a good gun, but also a good conversation piece and a rarity.

The last Winchester Catalog in my collection that offers Poly-Chokes is the January 24, 1955.

While I have no supporting data, but sixty years of observation, I'd bet that there are over a thousand Winchesters out there with after market Poly-Chokes for every one that came out of New Haven.
