I just acquired Winchester 42 S/N 708 which puts it in the first year of production (1933).

It is in excellent condition and is obviously refinished. The seller claims that is was refinished by Winchester in 1966 and provided a letter which is quite generic and vague.

Would Winchester still have a record of this and is there any contract information? I would like to get some detail and verify that this is indeed a factory refinish.

Following are some images of the gun and letter. Thanks in advance.

Doubt WW would have useful records. No problem believing work could have been done inside, and around 1966. Metal finishes (tint and prep) are consistent with late pre-64 guns and early post-64s. Including the receiver top bead blasting and treatment of mag tube. WW had long ago lost the ability and/or desire to replicate prewar finishes. Interesting that immersion/cold blue was not applied to bbl. Possibly this had become a custom shop-only finish by '66. Pauline would know.

Not sure what, if anything, was done to wood.

That letter is not legit. That is not Frank DeLuigi's signature. Winchester never wrote such vague letters as that. Doesn't say what they did or did not do to this gun.

That's what I figured. Too vague, no detail.

Thankyou. If anyone would know, it would be you.

Any opinion on if it is a factory re-finish?

Thanks again.

A letter from Turnbull describing a correctly restored gun would matter more than that letter. As is, the gun is a nice refinish - not a restoration.

As said, believe it could have been done inside in '66 based on the finishes. But the same finishes were being applied both inside the factory and in employee basements at least through the late '80s. If you knew to a certainty the gun had been done inside, was connected to that letter, it would still be a nicely refinished field grade M-42 - low SN or not.

Judge the gun.

I see your point.

Who did the refinish is secondary, quality of job is first.

Sure cleaned up nice for being an older gun. Of course depends when the refresh was done. Refinish on a nice gun that was 35YO and then put away after that would be one explanation.
