Hello all,

I know this has been beat to death, and covered heavily on Model 12's.

I've read many of those threads.

My question is about Winchester Barrels from the mid 70's on.

All made out of Winchester Proof Steel.

What is/was Winchester's stance on steel shot through barrels of 1200/1300's and the Super X 1 field barrels?

I'm speaking of MOD chokes and more open.

I have a 1300 from right before USRA closed at New Haven, around 2004. I know it is safe to shoot steel and has Winchokes.

I also have a 1200 I got from my Grandad's estate with a fixed IC choke barrel and a fixed FULL barrel (this gun is in pretty rough shape, but figured I'll refinish it as a at home project in the off season).

Did something change in the Winchester Proof Steel that allowed the 1300 to be steel shot safe vs a 1200 or SX1 barrel?

I plan to shoot bismuth for many reasons through my newly acquired field Sx1 with a MOD choke barrel, but I am wondering if I had the option shooting steel through it as well?

Thanks,

Jordan

What do you think Winchester Proof steel is? The steel wasn't made by Winchester. It is generally 4130.

4140 is similar in composition to 4130 except for the higher carbon content. The “30” in 4130 represents the carbon content by % of weight (0.28-0.33 % for 4130 vs 0.38-0.43 % for 4140). Because of its higher carbon content, 4140 steel has greater hardenability and strength than does 4130.

Modern shotguns from the 870 Express level on have 4140 Chrome-Moly barrels.

4130
4140

Tensile Strength 97,000 psi 148,000 psi
Yield Strength 63,000 psi 95,000 psi
Elongation (2") 25.5% 17.7%
Reduction in Area 59.5% 46.8%
Brinell Hardness 197 302

Thanks for the metallurgy refresher Randy, but that doesn't answer my question.

Maybe no one knows, but was WPS the same from the 70's until my 1300 was made?

It clearly states in the owners manual it can shoot steel shot for the 1300.

Did they change from 4130 to 4140 at winchester per your example? Or did they use the same steel throughout the introduction of WPS until New Haven closed?

Obviously steel can vary lot to lot from the mills. I understand all that. And you can heat treat with different parameters to achieve different results.

No, it was not.

Nobody will tell you that you can, but many many many guns had their chokes opened up with the advent of steel shot and are still performing to this day.

I would do it and never bat an eye with that vintage of shotgun and the steel they used.

I think I'll just stick with Bismuth. I would just like to find a FULL choked barrel in addition to my MOD, and I should be good to go
