There was a big online auction this weekend and I bought a very nice looking 1200. I have been looking for another barrel for the one I have had since 63, but the prices are outrageous. There is currently a barrel on EBAY that has a bid of $350. For less than that I got a barrel with the rest of the gun attached.

I’ve been thinking of getting a 20 ga for a grandson.

There are a couple of 20's on GB now. You don't seem to see as many 20's and you do 12's. Were they the same weight?

I don’t know about the weight. The 12 gauges were pretty light.

I did some serial number research and found my "new" gun was made in 1975. I got to see it yesterday and it looks very good.

I found my forgotten one in a locked gun cabinet in my garage. It was given to me by my mom (was my dad's) right before we moved. I put it in the cabinet, locked it and forgot about it. Last weekend during a garage clean up, I decided to store a bunch of ammo in the cabinet. Searched my truck and found the key. Opened the door and there it was. No rust. Looks just like the day I put it in there for the move.

My first repeater was a 12ga 1200. Traded it straight up for a 20ga Ithaca 37 (pawnshop, circa ‘89. Guess 20s weren’t too much in demand at the time.) Anyhoo, I never regretted that trade, nor have I wanted to get another 1200. Glad it worked out for you though. Sometimes a man just wants what he wants.

I took the new gun to the gunsmith today to have the barrel shortened to 21 or so. As I stated in the original post, my dad gave me the 1200 in 1964. If I would have known better, I could have asked for an 870, Ithaca, Mossberg or maybe a Model 12, but that would have probably been too expensive as we didn't have much money.

Over the years, I have acquired many newer and arguably better shotguns. I only hunt 3 days a year in SD and for the past 30 years my main gun has been a Ruger Red Label a good friend gave me. Due to the fast and furious action, I purchased an 1100 Special Field. As I got older, I also purchased a Franchi AL 48 20 gauge. It is very light and easy to carry. It also has a shorter barrel and is easy to shoot.

I don't know how many hunts I have left, I know it is not as many as I have had. I want to carry my 1200 at least once more and remember how I got it. Over the years, I have given a number of shotguns to the grandkids of the farmer I hunt with. After I am gone, they will get most of my long guns. Hopefully the 2 1200s I now have will get more years of service chasing those beautiful SD pheasants. Hopefully those kids will remember me and the story I told them about my dad giving me that one gun.

Great story, thanks for sharing.

I remember getting my 1200. Bought it at the local lumber yard. Could have had one of the last model 12s but we decided on one of the new 1200s.

With all due respect, I just can't see the love for the 1200. I acquired a very nice used one, a 12 gauge, in 1969 and found very little to like about it. It was tinny, had some plastic parts, and was whippy and handled poorly. I soon traded it in on a new Ithaca 37 12ga that was everything the 1200 wasn't and that I still own today. To each is own, though. If you like your 1200, hope you enjoy it.
