Owen and I took Cookie and Jenny for his first blue grouse hunt today in central NV high country. He was shooting his vintage Savage 220 20gs single shot, the same gun I started with at his age.

We each got a hard-earned bird after tough climbing in heavy cover and steep terrain. The dogs worked hard, and so did we. Setters and grouse just go together.

Was it worth it? Look at his smile and mine.

EVEN A TIRED JENNY WAS ABLE TO SPORT A SMILE.

Thanks!

I'm very proud of him. He hunts hard, loves the dogs, and eats what we bag.

Here is a later hunt for his first pheasants.

Luv2safari,

Thanks much for becoming a Grouse hunting Mentor. Great job with both the boy and dog. I mentor Grouse hunters as part of the RGS and when I see something like this happening I love it. The English Setter and the boy are one great team, congrats on a job well done! Passing on our Grouse hunting tradition is more than just a little important today.

All the Best

Thanks, Dave.

Alas, the two wonderful Llewellins in the pheasant photos are gone as of last fall, and smiling Jenny-Penny lost her right eye to cancer. She still smiles at me, but I can't do her justice much anymore. Old age and injuries from a cape buffalo falling on me and a fall from a roof have me slowed to a crawl.

Update on that grouse spot:

DOW introduced ruffed grouse into the lower reaches of the canyon, and Owen and his dad took two last season; Owen got one blue clear on top of the BIG mountains. They called the day a big success.

I recently added this young guy, a real wild child of a Llewellin, Woody. Training him is tough for me now, so I'll just let him be a dog and learn by osmosis...LOL

My little Griffon, Rosie, is bird crazy, and the bigger the better. She LOVES hunting sagehen!

Owen has graduated to a well used but tight Gbr Adamy 16ga SXS, and I was shooting my Kreighoff Trumpf drilling in 16ga and 7X65R in the above photos.

We limited on our two each sagehen and used some far-shooting Wby SA-o8 autoloaders with 3" mags. Sagehen routinely flush at 30-50 yards.

Rosie always has her nose working, even for photographs.
