No, or at least it doesn't appear to be.

I'm having a hard time getting Flight control rounds or reduced recoil for that matter here in the north country. I will include them once I can get some in.

Did not think so but I had to ask.
For the record the pics of the box of ammo were not in this thread when I looked at it.

That's part of it, I guess. Nothing against the work you've put in aquiring the diverter and pattern testing for us, but the one pictured above just screams "old school American ingenuity".
If form follows function, I bet it works pretty well, too.

Aslo some photos supplied by fal308 from TFL:
Quote: Yes I still have the duckbill modified 500. I had it done by Lakeside Armory (?) quite a few years ago. They had never done a 500 before and they used one of mine as an experiment. They decided to not offer them for 500s as it was a PITA to mount on the extended tube magazine of the 500. Don't know if they'd mount on a standard mag 500. I'll send some photos in a bit. fal308
FYI, the best I have been able to determine Lakeside Armory is no longer in busness.

Ok edits are done and here is some more pattern work.
First the three shotguns used today:
18 1/2" Mossberg 500 w/VangComp Treated Barrel ($200.00)
18 1/2" Mossberg 500 w/AimPro Treated Barrel ($70)
18 1/2" Remington 870 no barrel treatment
All the Rem and AimPro both had breaching barrels on them. The Vang 500 had a prototype barrel on it so it is not quite the same. it is not ported either. Should be sending one of my T&E 870 barrels out to Olean to balance the sheet.
Loads are standard 2 3/4" #4 and 00 buckshot hunting loads. FYI, It took two trips to differant shops, one of which was Gander to come up with 6 boxes of 2 3/4 loads. They had 3" Mag and 3 1/2" Mag in pleanty though I used these vs. low recoil or flight control to show barrel performance with standard loads.
It is important to pattern you own barrels so you know were they shoot. In this case I am running random what was on the shelf loads through three differant shotguns. I had one box of each load for the shotguns. paced off the distance and fired the loads. Pic's were taken, target posted and repeated with the next shotgun/load.

Nice review, Thanks!
Now, in your opinion(s), which one of these would you rate as the best patterning for defence? I have mine picked out, and its not the one I thought would do best, but I want to stay quiet as to get your collective "O's".
One of them just looks really nice.

Raisedbywolves,
The statistical sample here is to small to give a realy definative answer. Of note to me was that at one range one combo would do better then the other and at the next range the results would be the reversed. I would feel comfortable with either of the modified barrels, but by no means would I run from the standard barrel.
I would not count on the A&W as a general purpose barrel.
In general a smaller pattern should result in you being able to get better results at range. While a larger pattern will increase the odds of you getting a hit, although perhaps not a fight stopper. What you usualy see with flight control is smaller groups out of any barrel. So if you resrict yourself to that load for duty use you can have smaller groups, but you have to aim better.
Since I work with AimPro on quite a few projects I refuse to state a preferance between the two. As soon as I can get a Olean treated barrel done and some flight conrtol loads in I will ad them to the above.
Also of note I broke the 870 and one of the 500s this week. The 870 will not unlock on firing and I over tightened the stock on the Mossberg. the stock bolt bound up the action then broke a piece in the safety, result no safety, but the shotgun still works Still have not diagnosed the 870.
Both of those will be on the bench, glad I have 3 backups
My $87 salvage 500 action is still going strong

Does anyone know where I can purchase an A&W Diverter for a Remington 870 barrel?
