Ok everyone...

The better half made an impulse buy the other day. A Maverick Model 88 Security with 6 shot capacity. However, now she likes it so well that she *thinks* she wants to try it out with a few quail. Problem is, I can see no way to get into the magazine to put in a plug. That is, short of unscrewing the magazine from the receiver, and it will not budge. And, since it was a used gun...no operators manual. It will probably takes weeks to get one from Mossberg.

Anyone have one of these and can tell me what the owners manual says about getting into the magazine for cleaning perhaps? How do I get that darn plug in?

If it is like the mossberg 500 it uses a dowel rod as a plug instead of the plastic ones like the 870 remington. on the 500 there is a hole on the front of the mag tube where u slide it in. measure the loaded shells you need to take it down and cut a dowel rod the correct size

steven

Thanks Steven,

That pushed me in the right direction. I never would have considered a dowel inside of the spring. Too much chance of damage to the magazine spring. But, I guess that's gonna be the way it will have to be...

also put at least to rubber o-rings on the dowel to keep it from falling out. I have a new maverick, and that is how it shipped.

other than the location of the safty button, your gun is identical to a MOSSBERG 500.The way it is put together ,it is very hard to remove the mag tube, and I would recomend aginst it as you can,if not carful, crack the reciever housing. But if you do decide to go this rought, the way I do it is place the reciver into a vice to hold it succure, the take a piece of 1in. dowel rod, about 2 to 3 feet long ,drill 1 5/16th hole threw it about a inch from th end, take a leather shoe string and tie it to the end of the dowel, then tie it to the end of the mag tube, and twist it to the left,as to unscrew it,when it get bound up,tight, put some force behind it and it should brake loose.A safer way is to do like the factory dose and was stated earlier, use a 1/4in.dowel rod.one other thing I recomend is to sharpen the end in a pencil sharpener so it is easier to remove,as a note ,I Have had a small dowel in my gun for several years and have never had a problem with it jamming up the spring.
good luck quail hunting I.S.G.
