This technique was actually taught back in the day, while using a straight support arm, and was the preferred method of handling shotguns especially during riot situations. I imagine things have changed a bit with riot control since the early 60’s.

.

Then shorten the gun by pulling the stock back underneath your armpit, by your ribs, "hip-shooting" as it is referred to.
You gain the reduced length for maneuverability, you maintain a BETTER ability to control the gun in recoil because of both greater mass (wood stock) and frictional grip (between arm and torso side), AND you maintain the ability to actually aim accurately by actually being able to shoulder the gun properly when desired.

The only "gain" with the stockless short-barreled "firearm" is smaller size for storage.

Excellent! Shooting from retention also makes the gun much harder to wrest from your grasp. And no, it is not unsighted. You see the barrel in your
periphial vision much like "aiming" a pool cue. And like you said, easy to transition to the shoulder once you have created a little distance.

The only "riot-training" I ever did, entailed all the "shield line troops" armed with handguns, they were "backed up" by a few DM's, Designated Marksmen with rifles, whose job was to shoot any rioters who whipped out a gun into the game.

Shotguns would be too indiscriminate in a crowd.

From what I have read, riot shotguns were loaded with bird shot and general pointed low skipping it off the pavement into the rioters legs to avoid serious injury. There was at least one instance of this during the civil rights movement. Selma Alabama maybe?

Maybe at one time, not MY Guard Unit, not in my state, not during the early 21st Century.

Here is a list of violent civil unrest in the US. Some of these got pretty rough.

The use of bird shot to quell riots is over. Probably none of us remember the labor riots of the 1930's.
