I'm currently budget constrained and aspire to eventually get a reasonable home defense shotgun. In the meantime, however, I have a Remington 1100 skeet. Although I realize it's far from ideal, if I were relegated to using it for home defense, what load would be called for? I.e., I understand it's not set up for heavy loads, so I don't want to break it after the first shot in a tactical scenario. Any creative suggestions short of selling the 1100 and getting a Mossberg 500 (or whatever?) I do hope to get back in to skeet shooting at some point, so that wouldn't be my first choice...

Thanks in advance!
Al

Buy a rifle sight barrel for your 1100 and you can shoot whatever loads you choose, also shorter and handier for HD than the skeet barrel. The only thing about your current gun that might impact durability shooting heavy loads is the gas ports in the barrel, the rifle sight barrel has the correct gas port size.

Rifle sights are for shooting slugs. A simple bead will do fine at across the room distance as you will be focused on the bad guy rather than the sights. Barrel length is not a problem either if you take cover and lie in wait in order to to ambush the bad guy. I strongly suggest #1 Buckshot if you can find it but any buckshot will do. Avoid bird shot or slugs. The best thing that you can do is buy 100 rounds of cheap bird shot at Wall-Mart and practice close range fast shooting so that you know what you and your gun can do.
