I began this with a 25 year old 870 SP in 20 gauge, had it done in Battleship Grey (H-213) Cereakote, the usual stockset.

Woah, you might be running into some legal problems. As I understand it the Tac 14 is classified as a "firearm" because it never had a stock and therefore it never met the legal definition of a shotgun. Putting a short barrel and birds head grip on an older shotgun might constitute manufacture of a short barreled shotgun even though it is identical to the commoner legal factory made Tac 14. If I am right your biggest mistake is posting it on the internet.

Sounds like you did your homework. The premise for this regulation is ridiculous but unfortunately, they enforce ridiculous regulations.

yep, was kind of involved with this since before the Tac14 and Shockwave came on the market.
if you own a mossberg cruiser (no combo pack, pistol grip only), or a 870 pistol grip equipped only (again no combo pack), you can legally turn it into a non-shotgun, roll your own variant. A local class 3 dealer i frequent jumped on the band wagon prior to the two manufacturers releases and was denied due to his pistol grip design which had a hint of buttstock surface still intact.
