Hi, I'm not sure about the trigger group, but I know the barrels are definately interchangable. My 550abd has my Mossy 500 rifled slug barrel. From looking at them side by side, they look like it is the same group, but I don't have time tonight, to pull them down.

Here are the differences between a 1993 Moss 500A (L262XXX serial) and a 1979 Western Field 550ABD (H264XXX serial).

Main issue relates to the mag tube & action slide. The Western Field uses a mag tube with a pair of raised rings which form the sliding bearing surfaces for the action slide. It is also fitted with a flat, helical spring which acts as an anti-rattle device, and may also serve to take some load off of the action when the slide is cycled quickly.

The Mossberg slide will not fit onto the Western mag tube. The Western slide will fit onto the Mossberg mag, but the fit is very sloppy and will tend to scrape the tube as it is cycled.. don't do it. The complete slide & mag tube sets will interchange between the Mossberg and Western receivers.

Also, the Western has the older style firing pin (no spring & washer). There is also a slight difference between the internal safety blocks, but it shouldn't cause any problems.

The guns are otherwise functionally identical, and the trigger groups, bolts, internal parts, stocks, forearms and barrels will interchange.

Thought it would be helpful to post this.. please add any corrections / comments.

Yeah, the weapons are very similar, the 500 is a bit updated and the 550 has mag-tube issues, but I was wondering if the elevators are interchangable? Does anyone know? My eleavtor is screwed from the previous owner, he had no idea how to dismantle the weapon and I now need a new elevator.

I have a 550ABD. Bought it in 1971 at the local Momtgomery Ward Store in Junction City Kansas. It is a twin of the Mossburg 500 and the parts are interchangeable. It is a fine shotgun and Ihave had no problems with it, It still looks good. I have a couple slug barrels for it. I bought it for $77.00 new and it would take a lot more than that to get it away from me. I especially like the thumb safety as I shoot left handed due to being left eyed.
