Not only does it take skill to call Mallards down from 150 yds but , it's when you have them on a
string with their feet down , that proves the quality of your calling !
I still enjoy calling birds off another blind when they don't know when , to call , or , when to
quit ! Knowing how to call is one who knows when , Not to call !
Like old Paul use to say , if you can't knock the leaves off the trees with your calling ,
your call isn't loud enough !
First you have got to learn how to read birds , they'll tell you , what they want to hear !

Most first time callers never take their que's from the ducks. Spending more time
watching they do and do not like does make a huge difference

depending on where you live, we get about a 2-3 week period to wack woodies and then they are gone, they are call shy out here by me, they don't like spinner decoys, and they like less populated water.....don't over do your decoys, don't get stupid with the calls, and let the birds work, I hit em with the peeep and woot call from my 6 n 1 buck gardner whistle, works almost all of the time.

We have a great many at the farm in the southeastern U.S.
They DO NOT LIKE MUCH calling if any. We do put a few decoys
just for a point of reference and will peeep at them a little but
generally we find out WHERE they are going in the morning and
roosting in the evening. Lots of fun to shoot them when they are
coming head high through the dense timber

From what I have experienced & learned from other hunters it's scouting, scouting & more scouting. I do more pass shooting than decoy hunting. I keep calling to a minimum as too much calling can spook ducks & decoys where they want to be get results. I am not a great duck callers but some of my hunting partners are. I think mallards, black ducks, gadwalls & a few closely related species are about the only ones that quack. Wood ducks, pintails & widgeon whistle or squeal or however you can describe it! Pop use to tell me that duck calls have saved the lives of more ducks than anything else. Ditto for geese!

I can attest that both ringneck and blue teal "quack".

You gotta wait till they land.

I'll take your word for it! I knew there would be at least one exception to make me wrong but I think it is safe to say they are not "quack heads!"
