I guess.....that`s a new one for me! Pretty routine to hunt upland birds ( quail, pheasant, grouse, etc., etc. ) with a dog.

The hard part about fall turkey hunting is finding birds and getting close enough to flush them in several directions. A well trained dog can do that much better and faster than you or I can.

Nice bird, Turk. Which call was the finisher, the diaphragm or the pot?

Lots of the time I use nothing but a diaphragm and a trumpet The lack of movement required to call with a diaphragm is a great advantage, IMO, and trumpet calls are good for long distance. You da man, Turk.

I`ve just never been able to make the variety of sounds as consistently as I want/need from a mouth call as I can from a pot. No question the no hands needed for a diaphragm is an advantage. It`s not been a big problem, though, because I usually shut up when he gets close anyway.

In my somewhat limited experience, shutting up and making the gobbler come looking is the best thing you can do most of the time.

In my somewhat limited experience, shutting up and making the gobbler come looking is the best thing you can do most of the time. They are uncanny in their ability to localize sounds, within very small areas ,from great distances. Once he hears you he knows where you ( or what you hope he thinks is a hen) are. He may go off with hens, but he’ll remember where he heard you. Once the hens leave him he may be susceptible to a call and will remember where you are.
