Never hunted quail.Do though ,prefer the shorter barrels for use in the uplands, when I am after partridge(ruffed grouse) or rabbits(snowshoe hare).

I have never gelled with 24" or 26" barrels, I tend to prefer 28"'er's in the field for swing weight but I have a 26.5" 20ga 686 that's nearly perfect. It's funny what one half inch can do for the feel and swing of a gun.

Tex68W,
Got to admit I like the 28" double gun in 20 gauge or 28 gauge better than my 26" barreled guns. Just picked up anther 20 gauge L.C. Smith 00 with 28" barrels, can't wait to get back to Potter County, Pa to Grouse and Woodcock hunt with it. It will also be a great gun for Mearns Quail hunting in AZ. What a serious little gun that is like an extension of my shooting finger. Ordering some more RST Bismuth for the gun in the next few weeks, for jump shooting Woodies along Pine Creek in Potter and along Laurel Hill Creek in Somerset County, Pa.
all the best,
Pine Creek/Dave L.C. Smith Man

My 28" 28ga will do most of my Quail hunting moving forward.

I starting to like 30" barrels for everything, just bought a Dickinson Prestige 28ga with 30" tubes and really like it.

Joe, Got to admit I love the 30" barrels on my L.C. Smith double guns, finding a 20 gauge L.C. Smith with 30" barrels is a little on the difficult side however. My Grouse hunting buddy Ken Graft did find one recently, an old 00 pre 13 20 gauge in real nice shape, and man is it a sweet gun! Still looking to acquire one myself. Pine Creek/Dave L.C. Smith Man Pre 1913 L.C. Smith 20 gauge 00, with 28" Barrels, DT and three position safety.

ALL of my field hunting guns wear 24" barrels and have screw chokes and straight stocks, does that make me odd man out?? They work for me....

BB, Everybody likes something different, you are by no means the odd man out! All that counts is that the guns work for you and they are safe with the shells you use. Pine Creek/Dave L.C. Smith Man
