My son, his wife, and myself. Pacific Flyway sandhill crane tags.
We each can get two. We get them periodically, there a draw.
Great fun to hunt. This time I made some ( two) crane decoys.
Normally we do spot and stalk or pass shoot.
I have read they decoy fairly easy, We will see September first.

Are cranes good to eat? How do you fix them?

Ribeye in the sky. In Nerdbraska you can’t hunt them, so I have to travel if I want one.

Very good to eat. Take the thought of duck/goose out of your mind, nothing like that. It is red meat kinda Beefy testing.
We just cook the breast, the legs and all tendon, if you smoke them you can get some meat off the neck. We roast it on the BBQ and serve it with chokecherry jelly.
OUT STANDING.

Very good! Do you just peel the breast down both sides of the breast bone kind of like you do with a turkey? With the exception of teal, I`ve never been a real big wild duck eater.

I have eaten them where the cook made medallions out of the breast. Really good taste! The most fun was shooting them when they were pretty high above us and watch them fall. They are all legs, wings and neck and look like a Pterodactyl would have falling!

The best was when one of the guys I was hunting with dropped one on a hunting partner. It was so funny to hear him screaming! Great times in Mexico years ago.

Interesting that Sandhills, I suppose, have always had huntable populations while the Whooping has always been protected and somewhat rare. Were they almost extirpated many years ago by market hunting?
