its ironic, the range for 52 some odd years was mostly trap....and in 2012 they installed a brand new skeet field. 2 years later....poof.

Arcadia Skeet Club, Arcadia, Florida, closed 1986. Most of the skeet shooters had moved away.

Big Sky Skeet & Trap, Lacy Springs, Alabama closed 2013. The word is, the owner got ornery and simply decided to close it. Went by there six months ago. It is sad to see; weeds waist high, but you can still see the loaded skeet traps through the open windows. Club house still looks nice. Border fence along the fields is falling down. Paint is peeling. No vandalism - yet........

Harrisburg Hunters and Anglers in PA shot over a pond. They got the usual letter from DER that requires providing some info. But generally if the clubs respond to the letter and established a monitoring plan, and the pond and the shot fall are on the club's land there is not much DER can do. B-o-D panicked and at the next board meeting, and with no notice, they kicked trap and skeet out of the club. Oddly, they may have more liability for a clean-up of the closed fields than if they remained opened.

Another PA club not far away that also shoots trap over a pond got the same letter. Their B-o-D is in the same panic mode. Time will tell.

Wonder if they can simply drain the pond and fill it with dirt.

Which club is this? I know of one in South Central PA that shoots over their own pond.

Now that would REALLY piss off the fish

Trap and skeet is a big part of our club; shutting them down would in many ways kill it. I supposed the indoor pistol would survive, but the rifle range is small and short, and neither would provide any meaningful income beyond dues. Fortunately we don't shoot over any water at all, and the lead reclamation project was very profitable.

IMO, shooting registered targets at the club is like eating a "registered cheeseburger". It's the same cheeseburger, but you pay more for it and everyone knows you ate it...

that's true of most clubs. In fact, clay target sports are the only source of income, other than dues, at every club I have ever belonged to. (With the exception of some chump change in the coffee fund or hot dog sales from the kitchen.)

Coffeyville Sportsmen's Club, Coffeyville, KS finally called it quits. It started at the municipal airport, which originally was an army air base for pilot training. Some time in the late 60's it moved closer to town and had two skeet fields with one a trap overlay. In about 2005, the city manager decided they needed another 9 holes at the muni golf course and, by golly, right in the shadow of the skeet field would be a fine place for the 14th green. Of course, the gun club got the letter from the city to cease and desist. The club had no recourse as it was located on land leased from the city. After a half-hearted effort by the city to find another location for the club, the club itself located ground on an abandoned land-fill owned by the county. The club was never able to rebuild to have the same quality of facility that it had previously. After several years of operation, the county required even more insurance to be carried than the club already had (in which the county was named as the other insured) and the remaining members simply couldn't afford it. The machines were sold and they walked away from the grounds, leaving the skeet houses intact.

Been closed for years; it was a long haul for me but I enjoyed their shoots. However, the UCM shooting range in Warrensburg (MO) seems to be open on Sunday afternoons.

maybe when you have a registered shoot - but a round trip is 370 miles & my overnight travel is limited by a family situation.

Don't have one for practice - closest places throw old farmer targets. Shoot registered at Prairie Grove, try to make Springfield R&G

"Trees on a skeet field", a novel idea to make it more like sporting clays.
