Why not the same velocity as your other skeet ammo?

Exactly. I load to 1200, except my 410 are about 1240-ish, and I like them, so I'm not changing them.

Lets see: These are all 12 ga loads;
11/8 @1200
3/4 oz @1250
1 oz @1180
7/8 oz @1200
1 oz @1235
1 1/8 oz @1145
1oz @ 1125
I could go on but you get the idea :lol: This is what happens when you load with 7 or 8 different powders. I am new to 28 ga and have just one powder (Longshot) but 1200 sounds good to me.

Location: somewhere east of the I-95 corridor, until you get to connecticut. but you can bank on vanzant, mo..
all those loads can be worked to all being 1200fps with a data sheet.

My recommendation would be, if you are reloading only for skeet, hold your velocity to no more than around 1200 fps. Although you didn't allude to shooting registered targets, most registered skeet events want ammo velocities held to 1200 fps in any gauge/bore. Less is okay. From my experience, an 1150-1200 fps load is fine for skeet. Your average target breakage distance is usually about 23 yards. In my opinion, shooting at 1300 fps is somewhat overkill and a waste of powder. I would relegate a 1300 fps load more for sporting clays. Also from my experience, propellants such as Long Shot, HS-6, W540 (same as HS-6) and 20/28 are good choices. In the diminutive-sized 28 casing, the more dense propellants, which take up less internal volume are the better choices. I'll end by saying, I hope you have reloading components. These days, powder and primers are about as scarce as a hen's teeth. :lol: Good luck and good shooting!

Neither of these statements is correct, don't base your decision on them. There's a wide range of velocities that work for skeet, use whatever velocity seems right to you. FWIW, a little higher velocity in the .410 is common in factory ammunition.

Did you forget you asked this exact same question on the reloading forum?

eiderz is correct when he points out inaccurate statements. I have never seen where shot speed is ever mentioned in a Skeet match brochure or in the NSSA rulebook. Since the crossing stake is 21 yards from stations 1-7, and you are trying to kill the bird at or before the stake, most shots will be less that 21 yards. The reason you might want a little extra velocity in your 28 ga and .410 bore loads is to increase the pellet energy since you have fewer pellets to kill the target.

Nutmegs claimed that was to increase reliability in the temperamental 410 1100s.

Faster .410 loads seem to break the clays with more authority so I try to load my 28ga. loads to the 1300 FPS range, too. I gave up patterning the .410 as it was too depressing. I've avoided patterning the 28 gauges for fear I'll lose my confidence in their abilities. :wink:
