Wondering what folks are using for Skeet [ Sporting clays ] ?

O/U , Semi auto / 12ga ,20ga / 28" ,30" 32"

I know the trend is - longer in general for all clay sports. Skeet was historically short barrels and now 30" seems short to some .

My feeling is 30" is a good all around [ Skeet / SC's ] but can see 32" - not sure if the difference is significant .

O/U 's are my current preference but watched a championship shoot off from 2011 [ I think ] and there were quite a few semi's being used -

Do semi's offer any sort of advantage , aside from reduced recoil ?

I mostly use my browning cxs 12ga 32 barrels, but also use mossberg 930 12ga 28 barrel, retay masai mara 20ga 26 in barrel, and a mossberg sa20 28 in barrel

I shoot a 28" tubed O/U. When I bought that gun, 28" was considered long. 30" for skeet was uncharted territory. If I was buying now, I'd buy 30", but not because I think 30" is better for skeet, but because I believe 30" would make for a better skeet/sporting combo gun. That's important for me.

I also use a 26" auto for 12 gauge. I anticipate using it until I finish my last flat of 12 gauge #9s. Then I'll use the 20 gauge in 12 gauge and Doubles events. One reason is I have a generous supply of 20 gauge #9s.

I enjoy shooting different guns. All are 30 inch except the SX3 is 28.

Skeet
20 gauge Browning XS Skeet with 28 & 410 tubes (Primary)
    28 gauge Browning XS Skeet
    12 gauge Browning Crossover target
20 and 28 gauge SKB 385 Sporting SXS

Sporting
12 gauge Winchester SX3 Ultimate Sporting
28 gauge Browning XS Skeet (I shoot this about as often as the 12 gauge)

I shoot a Briley tubed K80 30" with adjustable rib, double release triggers (installed about seven years ago best thing I ever did),bought the origional gun 1997, switched to adjustable rib with adjustable comb to account for higher rib when the were first offered.

LH Remington 1100, 30" RemChoke barrel
LH Remington 870, 26" IC barrel
LH Benelli Monte, 26" skeet choked barrel

Why? Because they feel good when mounted. Tried a neutral Browning O/U but it never felt right.

I just took my Browning citori CX 30" out for her maiden voyage today, and Im absolutely glad I went with the 30" bbls. I'm just getting back into skeet again after about 10 yrs off. I was using my 1100 Tournament Skeet previously. I shot 3 rounds today and can shoot it all day. I was shooting 1 1/8 oz. loads. The gun does have some heft to it, but I like heavier guns. Thats one reason why I didn't opt for the Beretta SP. I had an XS Skeet and a 682 Gold E both in 28" when I was shooting years ago. Loved both but shot the Browning better, sold them because I wasn't shooting anymore. Anyway... I only shoot Skeet and the mid height rib on the CX was the main reason I bought the gun. Totally happy with my decision. Can't wait until next week!

I'm using a 30" 686 , added a barrel weight and already had a mercury reducer in stock - gun is balanced and swings nicely.

Giving thought to Beretta 694 looks to be well designed . Mid priced but would be an upgrade
LH stock no problem , Bfast adj comb for sure. 30" or 32" is a sticking point

Broken parts are cheap and easy to replace.

I own several high end O/U guns but for skeet I keep coming back to my matched set of 1100s Tournament Skeet. I just seem to shoot them better than anything else. Call me old school!

Some folks are also a little recoil shy for various reasons. As some get a little older or may have had shoulder surgeries, injuries, whatever, a gas operated auto loader in 12 ga. let's some people shoot longer.

Almost forgot something... another obvious one is if someone reloads. O/U much easier to save spent hulls.

My Browning 725 Sporting 20 ga and my Browning Ultra Sporter 12 ga have 30" barrels. I bought a Miroku Mk38 Sporter and the importer of those only had the 32". It balances well and I see no difference from the 30" shotguns. I also have an old Citori Skeet with fixed chokes and 28" barrels. I can't say I notice any significant real difference in scores or performance.

30" tubed DT10 for skeet

32" 682 trap for trap

Rare occasion I go shoot clays I use the DT10 w/o tubes.

Skeet: A 20 gauge Miroku Mk70 (same dimensions as a Citori 425) with 30" barrels.

Sporting: A 12 gauge 28" Citori GTS (like a Golden Clays w/o the gold).

Trap: Fixed choke 34" BT99

All work well for me.

Beretta 682 Gold E with Briley tubes (Skeet) & Beretta A400 Multitarget (Skeet & SC); both with 28" barrels. Been using 28" barrels since 1986. I see absolutely no reason to change. My SA duck gun has a 26" barrel and works just fine. The 'Indian' is much more important than the 'Arrow'. When a gun fits and you feel very comfortable with its configuration, you will be a happy camper. You, and you alone, will be the determiner of what's appropriate for you. I would recommend you not think or concern yourself so much with what other folks shoot and why and find out what will work for you. Its a simple process; buy it, try it, and if it doesn't work, sell it and repeat.

Was just curious what was being used , not really looking for advice for what to get.

I'm pretty happy with the O/U with 30" barrels for my shooting . I have learned that the better the fit the better I trust what I see

Learned I need left hand ,cast on stock "neutral" sticks don't cut it . May pick up a 32" just to see how I like it ,that'd be with SC's in mind

Also had wanted to hear more why semi autos were so popular , as I mentioned seeing a shoot off around 2010 or 2011. 4 of 5 finalists were using semi's

In the 70’s and 80’s the Remington 1100 owned competitive skeet shooting. As more O/Us appeared on the scene their popularity began to wane. There are still a few hangers on but many new auto loaders appeared that have further pushed Remington’s almost 60 year old design further back.
