Different statures, body make up and way the shooter mounts the gun can effect if the muff style hearing protection works or not. I have a number of friends that use them with no issue. I have tried them and have severe interference to the point that the muff would push my head away from my normal position on the gun. If these are smaller profile than the typical muff hearing protection it might help some shooters but probably not all.

If you're mounting the gun correctly, muffs will interfere.....

I have tried three different muffs including the Howard Leight, which I liked, and all of them bang on my stock when I mount the gun. But I am left handed so that is probably the reason. Jim

I wear thicker ones than that and they do not interfere; I like them as they help me hear the traps when they are hidden.

I have a pair of the Howard Leights like in your post, and get an occasional hit on the stock when I mount. For some reason with the Walker muffs shown below, I have no interference at all, and they never seem to hit the stock: https://www.amazon.com/Walkers-Digital- ... 173&sr=8-8I would prefer not to use the muffs, but I already have a pretty severe hearing loss, and need the extra protection that I can get with the muffs plus foam plugs.

the howard leights interfered with my mount sometimes. I went with the peltor sport tac and they NEVER interfere with my mount. I believe it is the shape of the muff.

I used some double sided tape to adhere some flannel on the muffs where they hit the stock. Put the stock right there and I’m good.

I use these when at the pistol range; but they don't work for me when mounting a shotgun.

Can you recommend electronic earbuds that are value priced , but do the job?

I use Walker Razors and while they work great, they're not without issue. To keep them from contacting the comb of my gun, I have to spend a few seconds adjusting them to my head prior to shooting. When I find the sweet spot, no problems..

Jim, I have 2 Howard Leight amplified headsets. i like them for times when I'm then trapper at 5 stand. Actually, 1 is my wife's. If you want to try it out, you know I'd be happy to let you borrow one for a spell. Let me know.

I use Pro Ear Gold which are muffs when it is cool or cold. No click or bump on mounting. I use Pro ears Stealth Elites which are ear buds when it is hot. I really like the sound attenuation on both. good noise reduction on report of the gun without all of the drama of turning all the sound off.

There is a better way without interference. Foam plugs for hearing protection and bone conduction amplifiers for ability to hear speech. See the Walker’s Raptor bone conduction speakers which I know to be excellent. There are also cheaper ones on Amazon. If you keep your head upright the muffs will hit the gun. You have to bend your head forward to avoid that. With the Howard Leight muffs you can fold the gun side muff up on top of your head and wear plugs for protection. With the Pro Ears you can remove one side and just use the off gun side for hearing speech and plug or plugs for protection. But the bone conduction method acids all the problems just remember to use plugs.

Update: I ordered the Sound Gear instant fit electronic earplugs. I was looking at Walker silencer primarily because it was rechargeable. Some of the reviews turned me off. It appears there is little quality control. Also, on two occasions I spent a half an hour trying to get through to their customer service for questions and my emails were not responded to. Sound Gear is made by a hearing aid company called Starkey. Every time I called customer service I got through within about 7 to 10 minutes or less or less. They even connected me to an audiologist to take my questions. They cost a lot more, $399 but if you watch their website they have a $150 off offer several times a year and if you join Pheasants Forever for $35 they will give you $150 discount. They have a 30 day return policy. My hearing is such that I have to take out my earplugs to talk to the guys when I’m shooting a round of Skeet or entering the clubhouse And I still have to say HUH , What, could you repeat that. I’ll let you know if they work for me

I have these, but only use them when pistol shooting. For shotgun I merely use those yellow rubber ear plug thingies. I really can't abide electronic muffs for shotgun shooting.
