I'm headed to Arizona for a 6 week stay to shoot sporting, 5 stand, and FITASC, with some skeet and trap thrown in. I took inventory . I am taking 3700 rounds of 12ga ,575 of 20ga, 650 of 28 ga and 225 of .410 . over 5000 rounds all together mostly reloads. The last 3 or 4 years i have always run out of ammo and had to buy more, but this year who knows if you can even find any. The estimated weight is over 500 pounds. I don't know if my Yugo can handle it
How much would you take?

119 rds per day, if you shoot every day of your stay........you’re probably ok, but since you can bring it back with you, might as well take it if your ‘yugo’ has room.

119 rounds per day isn't that much; I'd bring more................

You are not crazy, Sir.

If I had an opportunity to go vacationing and shooting in Arizona for 6 weeks, I would have to rent a U-Haul trailer!

Have a blast!

I wish I could go to Arizona and shoot for 6 weeks... Kudos to you!

And yeah, it sounds like you have just about the right amount of ammo.

Dad always took a dozen 5 gallon pails.

Don’t know what the conversion is.

But then they would always go out to the dairy farms and shoot pigeons also.

I think you need just a little bit more. 200 targets/day, 5 days/week. That works out to 6000 shells. Yep, you need to pack a bit more.

As far as taking ammo for your trip, I would take all I had. The only thing I would maybe be concerned about is what if you get stopped and the law enforcement find all of this ammo. These days, things are different now. I would suggest that you should see what the law says. This is not a joke or a smart answer but Things are changing real fast.

Sincerely,

Mike McAlpine

If I had time, I might come and carry some of it for you. I used to shoot 40,000.00 rounds every year, mostly practice. I didn't have a lot of money then (Less now) but I did extra things to support my habit. Have fun and I am envious.

I can tell you with certainty that your concern on whether you'll find ammo in Arizona these days is well founded.

I live in Prescott and I travel up to Flagstaff and down to the Scottsdale / Phoenix area routinely. Always looking for ammo. Always check in at every Wal Mart I pass for their bulk shotgun ammo. Nothing, zero, zip available. In fact, just today I visited virtually all the gun stores in the Prescott, Prescott Valley area for shotgun ammo. I found 5 boxes of Remington Gun Club,7.5 shot, at......$9.80 per box!

Bring whatever you have. That way, you have it.

Don't worry about the cops. Lot's of snow birds in Arizona in the winter with RVs full of guns and ammo. Not that unusual.

As we would say in the world of gunfighting, your off to a good start. Next I would trade in that Yugo, same same Prius, for a Pick-up truck. I recommend a 1/2 ton minimum, 3/4 quarter is better. Anyhow think diesel.

Last but not least I am totally envious!
(I plowed snow for an hour and a half this morning.)

Just kidding about the Yugo. We travel in a Dodge 2500 diesel and a 5th wheel. Lots of room. Maybe I will load another 100 shells tomorrow to add to the mix.

I have several 5 gal pails, they load 400 with a little room to spare.

Curious as to where you are coming from. We also pull a RV, a Toy hauler, but this time of year the weather has frequently given us fits. My wife is good for two weeks, will tolerate 3 for her favorite husband:^) She is a serious "Quilter" and although she brings a sewing machine along it isn't the whiz-bang model in her sewing room.

I would like to find a safe place to park my rig and even stay in it, somewhere centrally located, while we return home during winter.

We live in western Nebraska and pass through your area the first day. We always worry about Raton pass. We are headed to Tucson Trap and Skeet and stay at that complex. They have 200 RV sites but are packed in pretty tight. It is a great place to shoot after you pass a learning curve. This will be our 8th year staying there. My wife ,a non shooter, has found plenty to do with museums, zoos, casinos, and state parks.

Wave when you drive through Denver. I'll cross my fingers for your weather going over Raton. I pull our 28ft hitch trailer with a Ram 2500 Cummins also-hard to believe it is now 11 years old with 160K.

Do you ever think about stopping at Whittington if the weather is nice. I think they have 3 sporting courses now. I stopped there last March on my way to Phoenix for golf.

Have fun down there. It's a great place.

Ever consider taking taking less ammo but take the reloader and components??
