With the supply of target loads practically nil, and the price near double when you do find any, at the current usage rate, how much longer can the SC season continue? My guess is two months or may three at best.

Doesn’t seem like much longer to me. Shot a 200 bird event yesterday and they were selling pretty lousy 12 gauge shells for 15 a box. One flat limit. So if you really needed ammo you were getting hit for 150 there, add in target fees and lunch and you are at 300 bucks for a few hours of shooting. Sporting clays are expensive to begin with but this is getting crazy. No wonder there were only 35 shooters.

At $15.00/box some club is ripping you off.
There was a shoot here yesterday and it had 210 shooters.
So far the clubs around here have all the ammo you want to shoot, but you have to shoot what you buy that day at the club.

Agreed. I had ammo but I have been getting shells for shoots at the events if priced reasonably. I refused to pay that as it really felt like taking advantage of the shooters. My home club has been very good with prices and the shoot what you buy that day policy. Hoping this all gets better soon.

Pretty hard to shoot when you`re out of bullets. I would think the truly high volume shooters HAVE to be running low pretty soon when it comes to commercial shells. I suppose taken to its farthest extreme ( sure hope we don`t get there! ) the only people who can really shoot are those that reload (?).

My Club still has a good supply of ammo-but then again it's not in a big demographic area and they have gone up a tic but not crazy like I've read about.

Holding right at 8.00 a box for Fiocchi Exacta line and less for the SD line.

Many smaller clubs are not receiving wholesale shipments of ammo, and haven’t for the better part of a year. The old stuff is gone. Many are making the decision to go find ammo at retail stores. You’ll pay $8.00 to $12.00 a box plus pay personnel to retrieve it. $12.00 to $15.00 a box isn’t a rip off, it’s the cost to make sure there is some ammo available. It’s a hard decision. Do you charge what it costs you to procure it, or just run out? I can assure you that no shooting clubs want this situation. It is hurting business a lot of places. But you can’t take a $10 to $20 loss selling shells so you can sell $40.00 worth of targets.

At my club, I attended a Charity shoot last week, they had a decent supply of ammo at $7.50 a box. You could only buy what you needed for the shoot.

I talked to NSCA this week and was told that we have a little over 500 NSCA Clubs but only 176 are throwing registered targets so far this year. I hope this is just because of the weather up North. The shortage will end but we will not have the same prices when it does. As with most all shortages, companies find this is the time to increase their prices. Since we have gotten used to paying ridiculous prices, when the price drops we are happy and the increase doesn't seem to hurt as much.

Mike McAlpine

I still haven't figured out why we are having a shortage. I understand all of your reasons and I guess I agree with some but maybe not all. Please, you don't need to educate me again. I did appreciate all of the reason that were posted before!

How can anyone answer a question that has no answer at this time?
Everyone's guess is as good as another

I don't think the season itself will end but some shooters that had a small reserve will end up taking a break until able to find ammo to shoot. There could be some reductions in attendance as a result.

Every shooter will need to make choices on when to buy shells....at what price and how to use the shells they have until the end of the current shortage arrives.

Most volume shooters will probably be fine for some time as its typical for this group to have purchased factory ammo in large quantity or carry lots of reloading components or both.

In the rifle/pistol world prices have gone crazy. 9mm $0.60 a round, 223 $1.00 a round. Even .22 is going for $0.17 a round.

I refuse to pay it. I'll take up something else. I've got plenty of ammo, but when it's gone, it's gone.

It's a hobby, not insulin. I get paying what ever it takes to get insulin, but ammo?

What am I, Rockefeller?

Shotgunning is still reasonable compared to other hobbies like golf when you compare it the green fees that some clubs charge

I think you're going to see a lot of people who took a forced layoff last year due to no shoots will be forced to take another layoff this year due to no ammo or reloading supplies, at which point many may be gone forever when they look at their bank account and realize just how much competition targets are really costing them. Two years of broken inertia won't help either.

The real question is what is the tipping point for attendance for shoots. Obviously they all have loss/break even/profit numbers, and for a lot of shoots that may have already been a labor of love this may be the final straw.

I've already heard of one shooter who will likely not be shooting this year due to no ammo/supply availability, and spoken with one shoot mgr who's shoot is basically always on the edge of viability. Getting new shooters to replace ones that walked away isn't easy, but getting new shoots to replace ones that don't happen anymore is basically impossible.

Interestingly, I have more than enough ammo and reloading supplies to get me through a normal season. However, I'm hesitant to burn through it on what I suspect will be a somewhat abortive half-hearted year, and not knowning what 2022 may bring for availability.

It’s not ever going to end. Those that can, will find a way. This doomsday thinking is part of why we are in this current predicament.
