Our local Sporting Clays Clubs are charging $17. Plus for a box of ammo , this is
any brand or gauge ! You who think shooter-base would be lacking , as household
after tax income is being affected from several directions !

That's gouging. Either by the club or who supplies the club with ammo.

It's not gouging by any legal definition of the word. It's basic economics. Low Supply + High Demand = High Price

Price gouging also does not apply to items that are not essential to public welfare.

Price gouging does not apply to anything period. One club is having to buy ammo from a retail store at retail pricing and then mark it up from there.

That's factually incorrect.

There are around 35 states that have legally defined price gouging and have laws against the practice. Nearly all relate specifically to price increases of necessary items during a state of emergency.

Nobody should ever have to pay $17 for a box of shells!

Price gouging occurs when a seller increases the prices of goods, services or commodities to a level much higher than is considered reasonable or fair. Usually, this event occurs after a demand or supply shock.

Just because an asinine law is passed does not mean they are correct - look at 30,000+ gun laws. Gouging does not exist, it is a response to supply and demand issues. If you feel the asking price is too high then do not buy the item - you didn't get gouged. If you pay the asking price, you felt that the exchange of money for goods/services was worth the price charged; ergo, you did not get gouged.

I agree Terry.

$100.00 for the event. $68.00 for ammo. Another $30.00 for gas. That gets pricey in a hurry. $200.00 for one event and you haven't had lunch yet.

Ravenanme,

Not sure what club this is but, too rich for my blood.

I love when people complain about "price gouging", but have absolutely no clue what the seller had to PAY or go through to get said item.

I'm guessing you wouldn't consider it unreasonable if the gun club had to pay $16 a box for the shells that they are then making a buck on as a service to their shooters to AT LEAST something is available. Or that someone had to drive a couple hundred miles to pick up a couple flats of shells for the club to be able to have SOMETHING to offer. Perhaps you could offer your time and resources to help secure lower cost or easier availability shells so the club can sell them for a lower price. Or *gasp* even offer to sell them some of your stash for what you paid for them a couple years ago.

A year ago my club sold 12 and 20 promo loads for 7 bucks a box out the door. We were paying $5.50-$5.75 a box with tax, and a volunteer (me) was going to pick them up when necessary. Now supplies have basically dried up, and we are paying $8/bx to sell them for $10/box, and basically taking the scraps that people happen to find at walmart or happen to have shells from their own stash they'll sell us.

Simple answer, don't like it or can't afford it, don't buy it and shop elsewhere. Very simple. In a free capitalist society, if a buyer and seller can agree on the price, it doesn't matter what the price is. If the seller can't find a buyer, and they want to move the product, the price goes down. For those who have a tenuous grasp of economics, THE BUYER sets the market price, NOT the seller...

Around here, towing a trailer costs more. Towing a trailer with 2 axles costs more yet. Now tow it with a duelly 3/4 ton, more then a 1/2 ton with only 4 tires.

Wrong again. Price gouging does in fact exist and around 35 states have clearly defined it in law. Your desire to apply your definition is irrelevant.

Whatever. if you do not biy, how'd did you get gouged? If you bought then you felt it was worth the price, so again, how did you get gouged?
And just because some folks with zero business or economic sense passed an emotionally based law, doesn't make it right, it merely codifies a behavior. Try basic Econ 101. And if you watched that video, you'd see how allowing prices rise to meet demand shortens the time for supply to catch up with demand and allows other sellers to enter the market. Gov't interference in free markets has never done well.

Just as an aside, I saw some popular target loads online last night. Price had gone up $4/box.
FYI,

Walmart in S. GA got ammo in, 3 box per day limit; however, if those were 4packs, then you were allowed to buy 3 4-packs. AAs were at $7.97, so no increase since the one before Covid went insane.

Academy even had 380, 9mm, .223, .40 on the shelf - 2 box/day per person. Hopefully, by the time we get to Fall, supplies of target shotshells will be flooding the stores one again
