Looking at getting one of those fancy leather shell holders with mesh bags and see they have them in both clip on and slide on, wondering what folks prefer

I have an allen one that was cheap that clips on now but its super light

FWIW - I prefer a slide on bag.

I like the kind that requires it's own belt.

What ever type you decide on make it the rigid non foldable type holder and not the flimsy cheap cloth type you have to hold open and struggle with the box corners to get it in the holder .

Me too. Although I have a clip on also.

What's a "slide on" bag?

Has a belt loop & slides onto your belt.
