I spoke to a father of a high school trapshooter in a distant town. He said they have no ammo and will probably have to cancel events this year. Our local club is in the same fix with 4-H shooters, no ammo.I don't think any one would volunteer their reloads because of liability issues. I know I won't. Just an observation here but probably the same all over.

you can't even replenish reloading supplies, they have all been hoarded away

Take this opportunity to explain to the kids what can/will happen under socialistic governmemtal control.

that's a pretty easy explanation. panic hoarding is what happens when a socialist government takes over the reigns.

Called up a nearby trap club (the oldest, continuously-open trap club in the US) about shooting there. I'm told they have ZERO ammo available for sale.

I would have the individual team members & their families create a schedule to keep checking Wal-marts multiple times per day. They seem to be getting Winchester Universal and Federal Field & Target 4 packs with some regularity now.
Also, in 30 years of skeet/trap/sporting years shooting including registered I've never seen a reload blow up a gun, so that's largely a non-issue. My uncle who is 81 and has shot 2-3 times per week on average for 60+ years has never seen a reload blow up a gun in a way that involved the ejection of shrapnel OR injury. Yeah, yeah, we've all heard the stories and, sure, some shooters have witnessed or experienced this or that accident or even had a minor injury, but the chance of it is extremely rare with modern guns. Have the kids' parents sign a liability waiver or add to the one they already all must sign to be able to shoot on the team to address VOLUNTARY use of reloads during this shortage. Any gifts or sales of reloads should be explicit about the recipe and even the press used. A judge in western Nebraska is going to do everything he or she can to avoid bankrupting a reloader who was helping out high school kids. You just need to be able to document for the court that safety considerations were followed and the parents of the kids accepted the reloads voluntarily.
I might be alone on this, but if a reloader doesn't think that other people are safe to shoot their reloads that probably means they shouldn't be shooting their own reloads!!!

Some folks who reload have dedicated trap guns that aren’t that picky about the brass being resized. When I shot my father’s reloads in my field guns I would have at least a couple stick in the chamber each round.
That would be frustrating to a young shooter.

SCTP rules don’t permit use of reloads for practice or competition.

Local youth program received a grant last year for shells and targets, after purchasing shells the season was canceled. They have been stored to use this year.

Our team has 24 athletes and we placed our seasonal order and it's been "on hold" since January. Many of our athletes are week to week with a reduced practice schedule. Parents are scrounging a box here and there. Most stores have an allocation of 2 or 3 boxes, which is enough for one practice, for one athlete. Hoarding is hurting these kids and the families plan their summers around the big shoots. Hard to know if we'll have ammo for the nationals in July. They would expect to shoot close to 2 million rounds that week. Nobody can say the ammo will be there to purchase. Reloads aren't legal and it really doesn't matter now, nobody can get components.
Covid 2.0 for these kids. Many had to set at home last year due to the virus and stupidity and selfishness is going to cause them to set at home this year.

We have about 65 kids on the team. Numbers are down about 10%, and that holds true across our conference. Having the season cancelled last year has more to due with it than ammo.
Locally, most teams have enough to get through the season. Some may have to borrow from teammates. Hopefully more shells will come in for off season shooting.
Luckily we had good sources about shell shortage coming, and was able to procure enough ammo for those that wanted it. For whatever reason there are some that didn't take advantage of our shells sales, and it will be tight for those students to finish out the year.
You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make a parent buy ammo for their kids.

xss, true on can't make parents buy, but for many of mine it's more of a cash flow issue, not being able to foot a thousand dollar order all at once. Wish we had a large money parent willing to foot the bill and act as our shell warehouse, but not at this point. I guarantee they'll listen next year, when we tell them to get their shell order in place.

While I agree on the money issue, most of the ones that didn't buy either didn't believe us, or just plain lazy to come to a shell sale.
Even after the shortage kicked in, we were able to obtain all the ammo we wanted (twice). We now have those parents/kids asking about buying ammo.
I'm tired of being a babysitter on top of a coach.
Don't get me wrong, vast majority of the parents and kids are great, it is the 10% that feel entitled or play the victim card that set me off.
Our season will be over May 1, and then I'll have more free time to do my own shooting and put me in a better mood!

Im with you Jim......We are not having any problem getting shells for our college and high school teams. We must order by the pallet and have legit youth programs. The gun club is not having any trouble finding ammo (if not picky), purchased by the pallet. We have have had members that purchased the same for personal use. The gun club has stored 2.5 pallets of Federal and Fiocchi right now and receiving 3 more pallets before May. We have restricted our sales to shooters shooting targets at our club only. Have not had any problem buying reloading components all winter, again by the pallet purchased from a distributor. Now waiting for a month for an order for pallet of shot another of powder, primers and wads. They say delivery will be soon. If your gun club has not made an effort or have the capital to buy at these levels, poor management, whatever....... Members need to make changes. Maltz
