Just want to add two things.
I met Jim at nationals. He saw me, took some measures, and a month later he shipped me a pattern stock.
So far it’s been amazing. I used to see chips now it’s dust. I guess confidence on using this stock will help me a lot.
What’s really amazing , it’s how easy it’s for him to build the perfect stock.
Totally recommended .!!!

Gunner, Glad to have you down to FSS, again, and we are really pleased how well you shot your new stock!
Regarding 'Bondo', occasionally Jim has to resort to using Bondo to build up an area on a stock. Generally, when he needs to, it in a small area, not the whole stock. For instance, we did a pattern stock for Elizabeth during this trip, and we needed a small bit of Bondo to build up on the off side of the stock to keep some of the lines of the stock straight. No worries. Generally speaking, no Bondo is needed.
Jim Greenwood is still in Kansas. I had him come to the Shooting School to do some fittings and pattern stocks for students so they wouldn't have to travel to Kansas. We will probably have him come to FSS at least once a year.
We do a lot of gun fitting here, but its always great to have someone with Jim's level of expertise here......we always learn something when we work with him!
Best,
Will

I think it depends in part on whether Jim is starting with a new blank or working with previous pattern wood. And of course everything depends on the "shape" of the shooter. Jim always does what's necessary to make sure that the fit is right. Having Jim fit and build my stock was one of the most interesting and generally satisfying things associated with shotguns that I've ever done.

Why was Jim out of business for a while?
(I keep reading references to him being back in business)

(I keep reading references to him being back in business) He lost his shop to a fire. He was out of business while he replaced tools and reestablished a shop - took about a year.

He only went to bondo after my "tape improvements" for a better feel in the grip. Had been shooting with tape fixes for a couple of months.

Regardless of how he does it, he’s one of the best ever. Add to that such a nice guy, with a can do attitude, makes the process well worth the investment.

+1000% about Jim Greenwood and his custom stocks! I, too, consider Jim a friend. He and his son, Jared have been very nice to me. I have owned his stock for about four years. Just wish I could go through the experience again! Glad to hear that Jim is back at work. I can't recommend him enough! Jim Hundley

Is he back at the Michael Murphy site or some other location?

His shop is at Michael Murphy. Jim also pulls a mobile/trailer shop to some of the bigger shoots and can do fitting, repair, and pattern work from that.

Will,
Thanks for answering my questions about Jim’s visit to your school.
I emailed Jim last night about a separate matter and we had a nice exchange. He certainly is a nice guy.
I know I try not to resort to bondo if I can help it but like mentioned above sometimes you have to especially if the pattern has been used many times. If a person is going to shoot the pattern for quite a while; which I encourage then I definitely feel that the use of bondo is detrimental to the process because of its weight.

I haven't engaged Jim Greenwood for a new stock since this morning. He has my previous stock measurements. So I picked out a blank and no pattern necessary.
