I plan to hunt dove on public land . The rules say I can hunt hog during a dove hunt . They also say I can only use a shotgun and with no larger then # 2 shot . So the question is would you shoot a hog with # 2s or what round would be best. I saw a hog last year and was loaded with # 7.5s so I let it live. Cut shells not a option in this county. Bayonet lug not currently on any shotgun I own .

Those regulations don't allow for good hog hunting.

I've used BB's up close range, inside of 30 yards.
It is marginal at best and if I was trying it with #2 shot then I would go Hevi-Shot in a 3" and keep the range under 30 yards.

I thought it was a silly rule. Only thing I found was apex ammunition. https://apex-ammunition.myshopify.com/c ... -hogs-deer . I think I will just stick to the birds . Thanks for all the replying. I will check back to see if any one came up with anything or wants to talk more about how it would be wise not to try it.

Just an update on this post if anyone is interested .
Have shot enough pigs in the last year and can say from practice that anything smaller than 1 buck is a poor choice for pigs. It was interesting to see that even 1 pellet size change can make the difference. But the weight of the projectile ever so small made a huge difference in stopping power and the ability to down game in one shot . It looked like the 1 buck broke more bone than what the 2 buck did by a long shot.

#2 lead shot is not remotely suitable.

#4 buck is okay for coyotes, but not for hogs.

#2 lead is comparatively dinky @ 0.150 in. Back in the day, good for geese, not good for predators, even diminutive species.

It appears that TSS shot as small as #2 (.15") is now considered a viable pellet size for deer and hog hunting. The definition of buckshot is expanding again! Number two TSS is reported to give complete penetration on deer at normal shotgun ranges.

This article from the Clarion-Ledger in Jackson, MS tells the tale.

New ammo a game-changer for public land hogs:

And the Mississippi based ammunition company:

I know a lot of pigs here get killed with BB's but many people don't shoot anything else here for some reason.
I definitely wouldn't want to shoot a big solid boar with it but for 150lb pig it will do the job at normal shotgun ranges out to 35 yards.

Is it perfect, no, but it will do the job.

#2 shot is very marginal but I would definitely use it in hevi-shot as that would equal T shot in lead.

But the fact is if you can only use #2 then that's what your stuck with.
