I was told by a collector that inletting is same but head of stock would have to be worked down to smaller size. Thanks BB

Guess it depends upon your definition of "fitted". A 4"x4" post could be used too, but I wouldn't call that "fitted". Fitted normally implies very minimal wood work or wood removal.
