 Post subject: Belgium browning weights Sweet 16 vs. light 12, or 20 Mag ?

I grew up with a 1960’s sweet 16 hunting grouse in the southern tier of NY, and over the years moved through all the automatics and finally rested on Benelli... and now I’m in Kansas.

However, I really would like to get another Belgium made A5, because you just can’t beat the balance and performance of that gun.... So I’m thinking to buy one, and then buy an extra japan made barrel on it so I can have the invector chokes (when I want it)...

What I’m pondering now is the weight factor, I tend to shoot 12 gauge a lot, I am in Kansas so it’s either thick stuff, or open stuff... mostly open stuff - so the 12 makes good sense.

So the question... I’m now 55, and my Brittany like birds and bunnies... I like the idea of a light 12 but am concerned about weight.. so I’m looking at the Sweet 16, and Mag 20 versions as well. so if I’m planning on going with a mid to late 50’s era Belgium... does anyone have the approximate weights for those ?

Right now I have a Benelli ultralight, and it’s too light... so I’m either going to shift back to a M2, or keep with my SBE.. I also have a 1187, 20 gauge that is pretty light... either way I’m trying to find a 5 shot lighter gun for stomping behind my Brittany.

I think I found it via Google Foo..

Light 12 = 7 lb 6oz

Sweet 16 = 6 lb 12-13 oz

Mag 20 = 6 lb. 5 oz

Don't know about the Mag 20, but Light 12 Invector barrels aren't that easy to find and are generally expensive. As for a Sweet 16 Invector barrel, you may as well search for the Holy Grail.

Hey there Spotshooter, the chart I’m looking at shows the light 20 26” plain barrel is 6# 4oz. And 28” with VR at 6# 7 oz. other combinations fall in between.
The Mag 20 26” plain barrel at 7# 1 oz and up to 7# 7 oz with 28” VR.
Sweet Sixteen varies between 6# 10 oz. ( 26” plain ) to 7# 1oz for the 28” VR.
The light 12 shows from 7# 3 oz (26” plain ) to 7# 11 oz on the 30” VR.

bbush Mine weigh out as follows:
1966 light 12 26" 8.00 lbs.
1965 sweet 16 26" 7.02 lbs.
1966 light 20 (2 3/4) 24" 6.13 lbs. note: these are all VR bbl.s
My 20 ga. Mag. is about 1500 miles away at present. Sorry I cant help with that.

My Mag 20 (Miroku) weighs 7lbs 4oz.
It has a 26" VR barrel and is a great pheasant gun.

I’d really like to get the Sweet 16 with a vent rib, I plan on having it restored by Arts Gunshop so getting one that needs rebluing is ok, for that matter I would probably have a choke installed..

I want a great shooter that looks good, I’d buy a NIB and shoot it if I had the coin.

Now you guys have me wondering if the Mag 20 might be the way to go.

Couple of questions

How well do they balance, and are they not light for pheasant ?

Although the Sweet 16 has more appeal, I prefer the Light 20. There is a wider selection of loads for it and it carries as well as the Sweet.
As for the Mag 20, it is a very versatile shotgun. With recoil spring and friction pieces from a standard 20 it will cycle standard loads and again, there's the ammo selection. I use mine with 3" Hevi-Shot 1oz. #3 shot on wild pheasants and find this combination very effective. This is with a mod choke and a Miroku barrel.

How many loads do you need in a 16, or a2-3/4 20, for that matter? If that’s your only gun, swap it for a 12. My 16s fill some niches that only require a couple of shot sizes. Same for my 410s and short 20s and any 28. Just thoughts.
